Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oddly, Sydney doesn't really appeal to me much.

The foreshore area near the Sydney Harbour Bridge is worth wandering around, along with the Opera House. Even the bridge has commercial tours over the top of it.

The scenery all around Sydney Harbour is pretty grand to see on the ferry services or from cliffs at the heads. The Hunter Valley would be an obvious choice for those who like wine. To the west is the Blue Mountains which has a decent history and plenty of hike opportunities.

Of course, Sydney has a pretty high participation rate in the harbour yacht racing, and what's out there might be interesting. My advice is to stay away from Kings Cross, but you may have a more tolerable view of just about every type of human diversion that exists.

Apart from that, Sydney in my opinion is not good for cycling.

Sorry to sound negative about it, but I think there are much better elsewhere places in Australia to visit.

And almost without a doubt, your wife will have had a great time in New Zealand.

Thanks, Rowan. Those sound like good ideas. No intention to do any cycling, but I did think about thought of looking for a Weds night boat ride if there’s any club racing this time of year.

I sense that you’re not much of a city guy. I grew up in Manhattan and don’t like it either these days, but I do love me a good art museum.

Yes, wife is having a blast.

I will now admit, this tri bike thing isn't so bad once you get used to it.

I don't think I am wrong saying this... Sydney does have a good range of quality art museums which might be worth doing some research on before and when you get there.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia has been the organiser of the Sydney-Hobart race for decades, and has a great fleet of boats berthed there. Email them and see if they can provide you with some information on skippers/owners who are in competitive yachts and have available space mid-week for someone with your undoubted experience.

It was a wonderful place for me to be when I was a journo way back covering the start of the Sydney-Hobart and the Southern Cross Cup series, and I do miss it a bit when I see the start live on television these days.

I am fascinated by skeletons, especially when I encounter them in places where the cause of death is not obvious. While hi-railing one of our lines in the woods of NJ there were a bunch of white things in the middle of the track. Turned out to be bones. Possibly from a fox. Did it get hit by a slow moving train? Did someone shoot it?

I saw this while riding a U.S.F.S. road in an area of Montana surrounded by a lot of wilderness. Looks like to be a deer or elk. The road pretty much goes nowhere and is lightly used, so death by car, while possible, seems unlikely. I am going to be back there in June. Curious to see it again.

From the window of the train crossing the Delaware River via the Ben Franklin Bridge during this morning's bike-train-bike commute. Good to see the sun again.

Sad. The sun is out here, but we are supposed to get more rain off and own through Friday. It's threatening to turn my three-day trip into an overnighter. Reserved the one remaining campsite for Saturday night. If the forecast changes, I am pretty sure it will be available Friday.

Oh, and today was my first ride of the year that didn't include extra layers for warmth - just bibs, jersey, sun sleeves (socks, shoes, yadda yadda). It was wonderful.

My bags are packed I'm ready to go. Tomorrow morning I begin Ohio tour, part 2. Two days riding to Huntington, WV.
I hit 37mph this morning. That's enough.

Today’s ride had a cool start (roughly 48F) but sunny and temps warmed up a few degrees per hour so it was around 65 by the end.

I purposefully wore just a short sleeved jersey, gilet, shorts, and leg warmers. I was only a little cool at the start, and halfway I pitched the leg warmers, during the ride I adjusted gilet zipper up/down for descents/climbs. It was perfect.

The funny thing is the other riders were WAY overdressed with jackets etc., and I am sure they got hot and sweaty as the ride went on.

I thought it’s common knowledge to start a little chilled, but clearly some riders did not get the memo.
