I built and ran a Windows Home Server for some time. When that hit end-of-life and I needed to move on, I looked at building again. Rather than parts, the can of worms was "wtf software am I going to run?" My needs are pretty modest from a computing horsepower perspective, it's not like I need virtualization for x clients, so I ended up with Synology NAS. I'm happy I did - lower power, smaller footprint, flexible, easy to use.

Half and half straight out of the carton? That’s just nasty. Too fat. Although I did make some fig ice cream last week. Three cups of half and half, a cup of fit preserves, and a pinch of salt. Scald together, chill in the fridge and freeze in an ice cream freezer. Yum.
The trick of of course is to find fig preserves. If you are ever on I-10 in Breaux Bridge, LA, you can buy it at the Little Capitol convenience store at the Cecilia exit. That's what we do whenever we drive back and forth to New Orleans.
Speaking more generally, I have found that fruit jams and preserves make a tremendous shortcut source of sugar and fruit for cooking and baking. Supposing you want to make a strawberry pastry cream or custard. Just look on the bottle for the sugar content and use enough of the preserves to supply the amount of sugar the recipe calls for. The fruit just tags along. Best way to make cooked fruit desserts there is.

I used to buy and eat a product called 'Figpep', back in the early 70s in Sacramento. I wonder if it still exists. Ice cream, for me, consists of frozen berries from Costco, topped with yogurt and a bit of maple syrup, and stirred. I have some almost every day.

I have become enamored of Pajarero figs. They are only sold dried. So sweet! They are really good. Only downside is $$. Wegmans has then for $9/pound.

Pro touring tip of the day: Before you get a couple of miles into the beast that is the final 5 miles of Thompson Pass, make sure you have shifted into your small chainring. Makes thing easier. Ask me how I know.
