Cycling kit - full kit vs separates

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+1. Wear it with pride.

The La Vie Claire jersey I bought last month was way to big, so I gave it to a friend, and bought one in a smaller size. If he shows up for a ride wearing it on the same day as me, I'll swing by my home and make a quick change. That would look a little too dorky for me.

Plain black shorts. All jerseys match them.

I wear matching kits. I just kind of fell into it by accident when I found it easier (and usually less expensive) to buy the jersey and shorts together rather than buying everything separate.

If your bike is all black, your kit will also match your bike.

I know we're talking about colors and matching, but I have to talk about quality for a minute. Had my first ride in the new team kit last night. While matching the rest of the team was nice, what I noticed most was the quality.

I started off with cheap kits from Amazon (hard to argue with $30 for bibs and a jersey when you're just starting out), then stepped up to mid range stuff like blackbibs. Our kits are from Castelli, yesterday I wore the aero race bibs and climbers jersey, now I understand the cost. They are leaps and bounds better than even the blackbibs plus bibs that I have. I'm not sure I can wear anything else now lol

Castelli has really stepped up their team kits. We switched from Hincapie to Castelli a few years back and the first year was not good. The sizing was wonky, the pad was like a diaper, and the cuffs were really uncomfortable. But in the last couple of seasons, they have really improved.

I love the Free Aero Race bibs, but I wonder about some of their less expensive bibs(like the Volo).

This is my first experience with them, and I'm very pleased. Plus having the fit kit available to get your sizing right before ordering was really nice (I spent over an hour trying everything on lol). The fit and pad on the Free Aeros are great. Did a fast 50 mile ride with the team last night, and they were perfect. Have a century this weekend and the San Remo should be great! (since it's just the Free Aero bottoms and a climbers jersey sewn together lol)

We had an option for something below the Free Aero Race bibs, I forget which model, but just trying on both of them, I really liked the fit and feel of the Free Aeros, so I went with those, very glad I did! Now that I know my sizing, I'll keep an eye out for deals.

Good to know. Usually you can find Free Aero Race bibs on sale for about $120 in normal sizes, but XS and XXL are often much lower.

Good tips on the quality of the bibs. I don't own any Castelli gear because their sizing was all over the place for me. From the sounds of it though, they have upped their game. Maybe I'll give them a try.

It would have been really annoying without the fit kit. Turns out I'm a L in bibs and the Podio jersey, but an XL in the climbers jersey (which I absolutely love now that the weather is warming up!). I tested out my SanRemo speedsuit last night, def a snug fit in a L, but I guess that's the point.

Yeah, and that was the mistake I made. I thought I knew my size so I ordered a couple of jerseys over the internet. Man that was a mistake. Both of them were way WAY too small for me. The online retailer accepted the return, which I'm grateful for. Since then, I've avoided Castelli gear like the plague. Might be time to try them again.
