Did Trek / Bontrager "change cycling forever" with Wavecell?

Wavecell helmets have been on the market for a few weeks now. The reviews and studies and counter-studies have been published. Helmet rankings have been published . . . and revised. And perhaps most importantly, the weather has become somewhat warmer in the northern hemisphere. It's not summer YET, so the full impact of helmet cooling (or non-cooling) has yet to be felt. So . . . what do you think? Did Trek "change cycling forever?" Or did Trek's marketing department lose some credibility points?

Yawn.

With the prices as they are, the masses will not buy them to change cycling.

Yesterday.

Nope. Next?

Half of the people I know who get the Trek employee discount have one. The other half don't.

Maelochs 06-05-19 01:43 PM

Yes, but the change was insignificant.

031 06-05-19 02:14 PM

cant scratch your head while it's on! :commute:

datlas 06-05-19 04:21 PM

Yes. Biggest bait/switch marketing fail in cycling history!

FlashBazbo 06-06-19 10:03 AM

But . . . according to this less-than-scientific poll, around 12% of people have bought into the hype. I would guess that Trek / Bontrager's share of the helmet market, before the Wavecell, was less than 12%. If they really have 12% of the market convinced (and sell helmets to them), the shark jump has accomplished its purpose. It may have increased their market share. They weren't going to sell helmets to the 75% of the market that was put off by this anyway. So . . . Trek's marketing department probably thinks, "Who cares what those people think?"

BluFalconActual 06-06-19 02:18 PM

I’m waaaaaaay more excited that they are going to a threaded BB over a stupid helmet.

I bought a helmet, but I picked the first option only to annoy you. ;)

Didn't annoy me. It just confirmed my suspicions!

Cyclist0108 06-06-19 09:53 PM

I like the helmet. I think it is a viable (probably overpriced) alternative, comparable to MIPS.

(That option didn't really fit neatly into the trolling push-poll choices.)

Unsurprisingly, you didn't get it. Or perhaps you got it, but were disappointed that I didn't ask the question you wanted to answer. I wasn't asking about whether wgscott liked his helmet. (There are many good helmet options out there, of which, for some people, these products probably qualify.) I was asking whether the product "changed cycling forever." But trolls are gonna troll.

I don't have one, but I did notice that I have gotten faster since the helmet hit the market. So I say "Yes!"

This poll/thread isn't trolling?

As laughable as the Trek hype was, I do give them a bit of credit for trying to market safety, which is never an easy sell. I got 25% off on my helmet simply for surrendering a junky broken one. I think they deserve some credit for doing this kind of promotion.

I suppose you are still bitter about tire clearance. (Maybe invest in a caliper?)

This topic has been beat to death already....

I will again post my findings on it, all you need to know:

I mostly like mine. Can't stick my sunglasses in the vent holes, though.

I've come to love this feature on my Giro Synth.

To do it just feels so pro.
