Keep your disks away from me

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

asbestos is a fibre material that your body cannot break down and digest. its synthetic.

now, humans will get lung cancer from all similar fibers!!

including carbon, glass, kevlar, rockwool, you name it.

as long as the fibers cannot be broken down inside your body, by your body, then they are permanently there right.. and if they are very pointy, like fibers usually are, they will irritate the lung tissue until you get cancer. as will all/most synth fibers!!

wake the F up people. asbestos??? really? living under a big heavy rock lately? asbestos is probably like a spa weekend compared to carbon.

why do you think a chinese carbon fiber worker has a usable lifetime of 3 years?? because its so F-ing healthy to work with??
You are feeding this industry! You are responsible for this. Make no mistake.

Well, actually, it's a mineral. Straight outta the Earth. If it were a food, the label "natural" would be applied to the box or bag it came in.

The danger is not that it's a fiber that can not be broken down, it's a fiber that when it breaks down it does so by halving in length. Then that half halves. The halving continues until the theoretical limit of individual disks 1 molecule thick. The cancer danger is from when those halves get small enough to enter cell & cause havoc with the cells normal processes. Literally cutting up the RNA & jumbling the instructions the cell uses to do it's living things.

Other fibers generally stay together or split lengthwise & being long, they can thus be passed, caught, moved along, etc, where ever they need to go.

Asbestos' unique structure is why it works so good as an insulation. Thermal energy is not transferred along the fibres length.

Mesothelioma is a heck of a cancer. Watch someone die from it sometime.

As a person that has extensive experience machining carbon fiber structure: Your claim about carbon fiber is baseless.

Your claim about Chinese workers, if it has any merit at all would have more to do with solvent exposure, environmental controls, and attrition.

(Assuming you are kidding, usually you seem reasonably smart. I urge you to not double down on this.)

I actually read somewhere credible that the average life of the common chinese carbon worker was 3 years. before they were done pretty much.

I have a feeling though that carbon fibers is just as cancer inducing as the rest. Better safe than sorry imo. working with fibers. get a vacuum cleaner that sucks out all crap asap. at the spot. the worst thing about this is that we can't really test on ourselves. I stay away myself. I'm not gonna try to prove it either way.

but they aren't made of asbestos so none of that matters.

there was no explanation of the chiniese workers short "lifetime", could be solvents, could be carbon monomers. etc etc. but the most obvious cause is the fibers themselves. since solvents take maybe 10 years to kill humans, and monomers a similar time, and to be honest you dont need that much solvents to produce CF. monomers are produced by all epoxys. i guess its better than isocyanates that are use as the hardener in the paint. that masks can't filter out.

If you could provide a source for these claims I’d be happy to read them. My admittedly weak google foo failed to return anything.

Don't hold your breath waiting for him to back up his claim.
