Deffective xxx4 Wheels?
I just purchased the Aeolus xxx4 wheels and my son purchased the Aeolus Pro 5 wheels. When the bikes are on the rack and we spin the front wheels equally, the cheaper Aeolus Pro 5's will spin much longer than the more expensive xxx4. We have performed this experiment multiple times and it is not even close. the Pro 5 wheels will spin :30 longer than the xxx4. I checked brakes etc and nothing is rubbing or binding. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't say they are hard to move, but I can tell there is a little more drag to them when I spin them. I checked with the Trek dealer where I purchased them and they had no clue.

Bearing drag is only relevant under load.

Hey there, unfortunately that wouldn't be an accurate test to determine if the wheel is faulty. As another user mentioned, weight plays a factor. But in terms of the bearings, the bearings on the XXX wheels are indeed a higher quality seal to last long. Give the bearing grease some time to settle and you likely will see the change. Now, if you put both wheels on the same bike with the same rider and move at the same speed etc etc (you get where I'm going), you would find the XXX to then roll faster and overall being stiffer for the entire route of your choosing.
You should have nothing to worry about regardless, just enjoy being faster than your son!

I took it by the dealer today to check the bearings. Tech said that he re-seated them and that it made a difference. I just go home and tried it again against my son's Pro 5's and his still spun a good 25-30 seconds longer. Hate to spend 2k on wheels that "appear" to be dragging. The tech said he compared it to his bike and they were pretty similar. Maybe my son just got a killer set of 5's that roll extremely well.

Removing the seals would improve your spin-down time immensely, but would you want that?

I did the online chat on Trek's website. Here is what they said....
" don't think your wheels are defective, It might be the grease in the bearing that hasn't loosened up. But If you wanted to submit a warranty claim that would need to be done by a Trek dealer"
He said I should ride 100 miles and see how they are doing.

Has to suck when showing the kid how much better your high dollar wheels are than his, and that happens.
Seriously though.... The package is better, and as the wheels and hubs settle in, you can repeat this test, and I'm sure you'll be golden.

Don't get bummed out by how long they spin when not loaded. When you put a rider on them and go down the road the mechanical forces and loads are much different.

If you're super keen, pull out the bearings and remove the inner seals if they're even present.
But spin-down is for noobs - it only tells you the ratio of inertia to hub drag. That seal drag pales to nothing next to aero drag, and a light wheel that slows down quick from it accelerates faster.
