Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your bike creaks, but Where?

my aluminum bike creaks when i put a lot of torque on the pedals. First I thought it was bottom bracket. Changed that, still creaks. LBS guy said its pedals. I lubed it and it still creaks. I Cleaned the cables still creaks. Im too embarrased to chase someone up a hill cuz my bike is creaking so loud.

Hmm my steel bike does the same thing. Other areas to look at tighten if loose and lube if dry: bottom bracket, headset, seatpost, bar clamp. If that doesn't work maybe it is your wheels flexing (I think I am having this issue).

chainring bolts, stem, handlebars, cogset on freehub body, the inferface between the QR and the dropout, pedals, cleats, bottom bracket, saddle, seatpost, spokes/nipples.

A good way I've found to help eliminate the spots is
Ride in an area where the creaking usually happens - When it happens stand up but keep pedalling as fast as you can. If you can think of various other methods to take off pressure off of a specific area feel free to repeat it and see if you can help eliminate the area.

My impossible to find creak turned out to not be rear wheel spoke tension, but a lack of grease on the free hub body. Now I can hear other creaks, but I think I know where they are.

The joy of bike creaks is that they reverberate through the frame like all hell. Fun to find, indeed.

After you check everything that everyone has said you may have to rebuild you rear hub. I was in a similar situation a few weeks ago. Lubed my pedals, chain, seatpost, changed my saddle, new crank with bb and check my wheels. It turned out to be the rear hub.

qr is quickrelease.
dropouts are the notches that the wheel slides into the frame.
