Baby got Matte... Show us your Matte bikes!

Apologies if this has been done before... But lets start a safe haven for us fruit loops that thought buying Matte paint was a good idea.

What a PITA it is to keep clean.

Anyway, lets see em. Extra points for non-reflective pastel colours.

To kick it off, here's my grey Defy Advanced 2

I didn’t go into it thinking “buy matte” but that’s what ended up happening. Trek FX Sport 6 and Cannondale SuperSix Evo. The irony is that the Cannondale I initially wanted was a shiny beautiful Oxblood color. It was a non Di2 Ultegra transmission but I was willing to do without the electronic shifting...but there were three paint chip dots approximately 1cm in diameter each, right beside each other, right on the top-tube facing up...so that every time I looked down at the bike I'd see them. I just couldn't spend over 2 grand on a bike with that on it. And that's how I ended up with the SuperSix matte blue and yellow.

Just went down to the Bianchi store and ordered it off the web site.
Didn't know it was a matte finish until it got here.
Tends to pick up a lot of dirt fast.

I also didn't choose matte on purpose but it was a replacement frame, and the only option offered from Giant at the time. Thinking about stripping it and trading for a TCR or Defy frame.

If I get extra points for the color, maybe it'll offset the negative points for the NDS pic -

Nice Bike, but that looks even harder than mine to keep clean lol

It is hard to keep clean. I give it a good cleaning every so often, but it's usually just keeping it from being too dirty, as opposed to keeping it clean.

Your pic isn't showing for me, BTW - dunno if it's a permission thing or what.

Lets try that then

im using the muc-off matte finish detailer as a protectant. Definately makes removing the oils and that easier, but doesn't stop it getting dirty

Now it's showing - nice bike. I like that (lack of) colorway.

Weird mix of aero and non-aero. The colour was not even noticed at the time I bought it.

This Chinook titanium tandem is matte (except for the artwork, which is shiny). For pastels, it has some purple and periwinkle, but they're shiny. Now I'm wondering how it would look with anodizing on the matte parts of the frame.... Pictures were taken before getting it dirty for the first time.

All this talk of matte bikes being hard to keep clean (which my experience with the blue and yellow Cannondale confirms)...

I really wanted my next bike purchase, probably an "aero" model in 2021 when I've gotten my strength and endurance up to the point where I feel I deserve one, and when Shimano have updated their Dura-Ace and likely their Ultegra lines, to be a really cool eye-catching color. But now I'm starting to think it will be black. Because although if you looked at my Trek closely it would probably be just as dirty as my Cannondale, just casually looking at it you wouldn't be able to tell there was any dirt on it.

I'm starting to think matte black is the way to go. So 1) it doesn't show dirt and damage easily, and 2) paint damage basically...blends in.

Maybe if someday I have access to/live near a really velodrome where I can rent time to use I'll get a sweet bling-y colored bike since the chances of damage and dirt there are extremely limited.

I find that it isn't too hard to keep a matte finish clean. Either that or I just don't notice it too much.

Btw, keeping this matte finish isn't difficult at all. I've been using Chemical Guys Matte detailer and sealant for years; my previous De Rosa Merak had a matte finish too. I currently maintain the matte tinted rims on my QX80 using the CG matte detailer too.

I wonder if matte doesn’t protect well from uv light which is bad for carbon frames supposedly

Definitely.
I painted the windows in our house matte black and I can still see clearly through them and all the colours on my expensive furnishings are fading as fast as ever!
