Why are roadies going 1x11 or 1x12?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why are roadies going 1x11 or 1x12?

What a fantastic troll thread.

What is on sale at the LBS?

Last I checked, planned obsolescence is still in full effect.

Less is more, not everyone needs 30+ gears, or a bicycle that costs as much as a new car.

Clutched narrow wide setups in small cogs don’t like to be pedaled backwards- “let’s make a 9t cog for our cassette!”

Promises, promises.

Can't you you just shove it off the cliff and put it out of its misery?

Well VC seems to be quite smitten with his 12 speed.

Who am I to argue?

There are more than a few crit/track guys around here that ride 1x11/12. I think for races that don’t have steep or long climbs, Single chainring setups can work very well. If I only had one bike to race on, double without a doubt. The pros just don’t outweigh the big con of having too much space between gears. I would be surprised to se a 1x12 setup at the Tour of Utah, for example.
