Why are roadies going 1x11 or 1x12?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I enjoy that we're all waiting in breathless anticipation of a photo of a bicycle. Here, now, in the 21st century. Where I could-- with little effort-- compose, take, upload, and link a verifiable photo of any of my bikes in less than 5 minutes.

It's refreshingly retro.

Indeed. I would have a go, if there were any sport to it.

Unfortunately the 41-pond is overstocked with an inedible invasive species, the Sock Puppet.

I have an 11/40 with a 46t upfront. I have been lazy and haven’t adjusted the rear mech in a while, so I haven’t beeen able to get into the 11 in some time. I can get up to high 30’s, maybe low 40’s if I am spinning quick on a downhill, and I tuck more at that speed anyways. This is on my gravel bike, that I use as my road bike as well.
