Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

buying a trek 1200

i posted a few weeks back about getting into a road bike, been using hybrid daily for 20 miles commute - and want to have some variety and maybe get going a bit faster

i love the trek 1200, compared it to the 1500, but 1500 does not have attachment points for rear rack, and i don't see a huge tech difference for my needs (i've read all the comparison posts)

also road a few specialized, but i like the more slightly more upright feel of trek - i did test ride in traffic, heavy wind, busy trail and felt very comfortable

thought i'd share, if there's anything similiar to 1200 anyone recommends i'd love to try

thanks

I've been considering a 1200 for my first 'real' road bike. Have a 25 year old Schwinn right now to see how I like the drop bar setup. I'd be interested to hear how you like it in 6 months.

I don't know if this applies to you but... One thing I found when I got my first road bike is I was used to riding a hybrid with an upright feel to it and all the road bikes felt odd because I was leaning so forward. After a year on the road bike I was really uncomfortable in and upright riding style and fliped the stem - it made me more comfortable to ride more areo. I don't know if you are like me and coming at it from a hybrid or mountain biking backgroud, but keep in mind that the upright feel that seems comfortable to you now may be just the opposite in 6 months.

Agreed. Hybrids feel slow and unresponsive. Strangely, my shoulder gets sore when I ride on a hybrid bike after about 15 minutes, whereas I can spend hours and hours on a road bike with no pain...

good point. i don't think the 1200 is much more upright than the rest (comments
experts)?

my fourth ride on a road bike (i two weeks) felt so much more enjoyable and relaxed than the first

I just picked up a Trek 1200 and I love it. I think it's actually quite comfy but I am a sportbike motorcyclist too so I'm used to the low bars. It's a great bike so far although the seat is a bit eehhh.

Thats Great, If you start having problems with comfort due to the bars and stem, they can adjust it, worse case scenerio you might need a new stem, but it'll work out, happy riding to you and I hope to see you on the trails.

I got the Iron Horse Triumph over the Trek just because its got a little longer reach to the bars and I have a longer torso.

been riding a 2100c since the beginnig of the year and really like . i also was comuting with a hybrid. it was nice on the rough way to work so i changed my route to ride the trek. i really like the "c" for comfort type version better for my recreational rides. unless you really plan to race try it you'll like it.

I rode a 1200 for 9 years. It was my first road bike and was ultra reliable. The only change that I made was to add a 0 degree rise stem to make it a bit more upright. The only complaint that I had was that with the aluminum frame and cromo fork it was harsh on rough roads or the tar and chip that the cheapos in PA are fond of using on the roads. I believe that the newer ones have a carbon fork that should help. Make sure it fits you and just ride!

I bought a 1200 this spring and love it. Rode Specialized Allez and LeMond Etape as well as the 1200, bought the Trek because the 1200 felt best to me. The 1200 replaced my Trek 1000 which I only got 16 years of use out of, so you might bear that in mind when considering Treks. Trek even replaced my 1000 frame for me once early in it's life when I had a wreck and knocked off one of the glued on (thermal bonded I think was their terminology at the time) down tube shifter mounts. It was my fault but they still did it for no charge. Great company in my opinion.

thanks all - i'm 5'8 so i'll mostly likely get a 50. took one out yesterday and loved it

my only problem is that i wanted the full silver/metal color, and my LBS only has the silver with black front. the new ones come out in november.

i could call around, but i like my LBS because it's right by my house, real easy to get tune ups when needed (they never charge me for small tune ups)

i'll be putting the rack on the back for my trunk box when commuting, my rear trunk weighs 12.5 pounds (weighed it on the UPS machine at work)
