We were tourists, we rode the canyon, Snowy got a speeding ticket

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

THE RIDE
From Loveland, east on Hwy 34 through the Big Thompson Canyon to Estes Park... the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park.
One-way: 30 miles, 4200 feet gain... the return trip was screaming fast

At a big lake in Loveland, we stopped to unload our gear and set off. Here's snowy and said lake...

About half way to Estes, we're rolling uphill about 13-14mph. The canyon was simply spectacular and I was too busy enjoying the day to snap but three photos. Only one good one tho...

We have arrived in Estes. It was a grand ride that screams, we need to be On The Road again, even before we've finished. I had brought my trunk to change into shorts and sandals while we ate and walked the town. Here's us after chaning and again enjoy the meal...

Changing and returning to The Road...

THE COP

Nah, snowy didn't get a ticket, but she was exceeding the speed limit a bit at times

We had been buzzed a few times and yelled at by two red necks in their Dixie truck. So when the cop came passing us -- in not a very safe manner either -- and said over the PA, "Ride single file." Well, I just had to tell him what I thought about that, so I yelled, "Pull over!"

I didn't know if he heard me or not, but snowy said, "Don't bother yelling, they can't hear you." A few miles down the canyon, he was pulled over in a safe area, so we stopped. I guess he heard me.

He was very cool, asked what was wrong and I said I was frustrated with the drivers, including him telling us to ride single file since the law had been changed recently. I was cool about it cuz there's no way the cops can know every single law. He got his book, we chatted for a while, I told him why I was in the lane -- twisty canyon, blind curves, we're doing 25-40mph anyway -- including my philosophy about why I was taking the lane...

A whole bunch more people will accidentally run you off the road than those few psychos who'll hit you on purpose for taking the lane.

The cop lowered his head, laughed, shook his head and agreed. Being a motorcyclist himself, he understood.

We parted ways with a handshake, good wishes, and him saying that he'd investigate the laws better and pass the info along to his guys.

Wow you told a police officer to pull over.....heh
See not all cops are bad, the majority are decent enough.

Oh and where did you get that jersey, burning man or woodstock?

arghhhh... ... One of the reasons I want to go to boulder is because those hills were pretty imposing when I was a poor student on my Magna street bike.. I wanna see if I can power up those hills like the guys who used to pass me....

Thanks for the photos -- sounds like you had a fun ride. Since I live in Ft. Collins, I've been working up the mileage to be able to do that ride, but I'm not there yet. The route through Glen Haven would have had much less traffic (but it's also much steeper).

Looks cool! Definitely different scenery from what I'm used to, so thanks for the pics. Now I feel I HAVE TO come out to Colorado this spring. I'll be down at the Grand Canyon, but a little detour never hurt anyone. Who's with me?!

Nice photos, guys! Looks like a good scenic ride - will have to try that sometime.

Cops were out in force today - we passed 7 that I counted on the drive out to Fruita this afternoon. After that I ran out of fingers.

Great pics guys! I'm looking forward to the weekend that's not booked up with weddings, parties, birthdays, etc., etc... I have still been riding - just not as often or as far as I'd like. LordOpie, I look forward to the next trip I can take with you and snowy!

BTW, great job with the cop - my helmet is off to you for doing that!

God, Telenick where have you been??? We have been missing you. Yep, loved the ride coming down, I think I hit 40mph at one time and I didn't freak, also passed a fellow male biker. It was too cool.

I've been gasping for air in Leadville.

40mph? What were you thinking?

a) gee, the wind in my face feels sooo damn good.
b) if I hit some gravel in the next turn, then it's gonna be ugly.
c) LO has a cute butt.
d) counter steer
e) i need more gear damnit!
