Got a steal.....
Went on a ride this morning with a couple of buddies that I haven't rode with in awhile. One of the guys trains for tris and owns like four bikes. So I show up with my new Scott CF1 Team and he says man that is a nice bike but that wheelset is heavy(Mavic Equipe) and proceeds to go into his garage and brings out a set of 2002 SSC (never raced btw and true, Pro Cipollini Specialized Turbo tires ) (SSC not SSC SL- SSC were made prior to the split Elite vs. SL and when they started shaving between the nips) and ask me I wanted to trade. Once I picked my jaw off the floor I said yeah but why are you letting them go? Seems he has a rainy day bike that he is selling and would prefer the SSC's been ridden buy someone who will appreciate them and take care of them. I threw them on, threw him a Franklin, and WOW  these things spin up alot better and made my day riding alot easier seeing that I dropped close to a .5 lb before the ride started.
Equipe front 835 g, rear 985 g SSC front 713 g, rear 886 g It's good to have friends in the cycling community. BTW 63 miles ave 17.8 |
Sounds like a great way to start a morning off--new wheels, and a nice ride. It is great to have cycling buddies that can afford (and later pass on) the real nice stuff!! :D Glad you dig the new wheels and had a great ride.

Great story - it is good to have friends into cycling.
2+ years ago when I decided to get back into cycling, I consulted a friend at work who had many bikes. After months of talking, he brought in a Gunnar Crosshairs and asked me if I wanted to buy it. $1000 was my budget and although this bike was set up with full ultegra and Race Lite wheels, he'd sell it to me for that. For 3 months I stared at that bike in his office and hounded him with questions every day while I saved my cash to buy. Finally, I told him I had the money. He took the bike home that night to "change the stem" and returned the next day carrying a hardly used Trek 5500 frame. I ooh'd and awed and asked him what he was doing with it. He said he was going to pull the parts off the Gunnar and sell it....to me. In the end I got a mint condition, fully built 5500 for $1000. That was the start of the madness. 55/Rad |

This must be the entry level CR-1 you have. I'm suprised that model isn't more popular.
Great frame and even with 105 and Equipes it's still 17 lbs.
