Zipp 454
Anyone have any experience with Zipp 454 clinchers non disc? I am looking at a used S works tarmac with zip 454, have not ridden those wheels, wondering about others experience with them. It's a 52 cm Peter Sagan edition with E tap 11 speed otherwise. 2017 vintage, seller is asking 7k which considering the wheels seems like a good price

Sounds like a killer bike, but since you have a Emonda SLR, you already have a killer bike.

Exactly.. X=N + 1 I believe is the formula. I have been a monogamist to the emonda for about a year since I sold my colnago cx-1 evo. Always a good idea to have a backup bike in case of need for maintenance, ship one bike for travel, etc. Did the first ride this afternoon on the Tarmac, with the Zipp's its a rocket going downhill, and does well into the wind. Geometrically its very similar to the emonda the fork and headset are a little bit more "raked" I believe is the term, slanted a little more backward, but the stem is longer so the distance from seat to bars is identical. The Emonda has midcompact, 52-36, the tarmac compact 50-34, both etap11

I have a CX bike as my backup. That way I have something different to ride. It's my foul weather / winter bike.
To me having a Emonda SLR and Tarmac S-Works is like having a Audi SR5 and BMW M4. I'd rather just have the Audi and a Subaru Outback.

When I had the CX glen the geometry was so different from the emonda I almost never rode it. What I am after is a new #1 bike which will be the tarmac but similar geometrically to the Emonda, which it is.
Only negative a friend brought up is non disk brakes, since thats the way the world seems to be tilting. I am not big, weigh about 155 so stopping is not a major problem. This same bike new with disk brakes and these wheels is north of 12K. Not worth it for sure

Before I got my Emonda, I have a Madone 4.6. I rode the Tarmac, Super Six and a Cervelo and a few others. The Emondahad the same geometry as the Madone and was the most comfortable. If you're not 100% comfortable on a Tarmac, don't buy it.
As to my CX, I swapped the 44cm bars for 42cm (which is what I ride on the Emonda). I also put a cheaper version of the same saddle. I set the saddle height the same, want with a 100mm stem vs the 110mm and i'm 100% comfortable. The CX is a Cannondale SuperX.
The ride and handling is totally different than the Emonda and it soaks up the bumps, potholes and sticks on the winter roads.
It's the same but different. It's the same reason I have 4 different torque wrenches. The right tool for the job.

I have no experience with the Zipp's so I can't help with your original question. But since things are going a different direction, I'll add a thought to the bike choice.
I've had an Emonda SLR for 4 years or so. This year I bought a new Madone. Now I have the crazy, light bike for the hardest mountain days and the aero bike for all else. I'm very satisfied as the two bikes are set up pretty similarly from a fit perspective, but you can certainly tell they are different bikes when riding. My point is: strongly consider getting something that hits a different "target market" of riding. Otherwise, you may end up riding one 95% of the time.

The S Works Tarmac sounds like a great deal. I wouldn't hesitate if I were you. Nothing like adding another great bike to your stable.

I've had the 454's since 2018 when I built a new bike.
They are EXTREMELY loud both with braking (sounds like a jet turbine revving) and freewheeling. Most troubling, the bike had a persistent creaking/cracking sound when going up hills. I did everything to get rid of the sound - replacing bottom bracket, tightening chainrings, etc - but the sound persisted. Until, I swapped out the rear 454 with a friend's 202 NSW. Completely eliminated the sound. And it was dramatically quieter than the 454 even with braking.
Twitchy on descents and yes, gets pushed sideways with a crosswind.
My mechanic has talked about rebuilding the hub but I'm actually thinking about selling them. I'm extremely disappointed in this product.
