Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nothing much for us this weekend.

I was bit by something (suspect spider) about 9 days ago, and put on medication for it when it started to spread up my arm. Between the bite, the side effects of the medication, and the side effects of going off the medication, I ended up somewhat out of commission all week, and sleeping most of this weekend.

Hoping for a better week ahead.

@Machka: Yikes! So it's true -- everything in Australia really is trying to kill people. Seriously though, get well soon. Lots of rest is probably best for now.

Saturday and Sunday were my first outdoor rides since last weekend. Danged sinus inflammation and congestion causing almost non-stop headaches, dizziness and nausea. Sudafed and a bunch of other stuff helped for awhile this weekend, just enough for a couple of rides in properly cool autumn weather before another arctic blast hits us next week.

Saturday: 35 miles on a beautiful, sunny and clear moderately warm afternoon. Faster than my usual speed on this familiar route, so I must have felt better than I thought I felt? Something like that.

Sunday: 24 miles, similar route and weather, late afternoon after waiting all day for sinus headache and congestion to clear up. Felt pretty good once I got going.

Not quite feeling up to tackling another solo century but will do as soon as weather permits. I've intended to do one a month but missed October.

Yesterday's "Sunday" here did the same as llast Sunday's ride. 42km's 3200ft climbing on 42-25 ha low gear. I did lower the stem a little and the bike was flawless.
Bright sunny warm day, can't get better conditions but felt a little off and weaker in the legs, still a good ride though.

I just got this Medici and spent Friday afternoon and Saturday completely going through it , greasing and cleaning , new cables and tires ,etc. Then Sunday morning set out early to do 30-40 mile shakedown. About 3-4 miles from home , not feeling so well. I continued on expecting the fresh air and cycling would make it go away. Not the case , I got to my shop in Ventura and when I got off my bike I could hardly walk! Very sharp pain in my abdomen so I had my wife come and get me. By this morning I feel great , of course , I have to work. Oh well another weekend just around the corner, Joe joesvintageroadbikes.wordpress

I didn't get much riding in this weekend. Just one quick Saturday morning ride up the south fork of Provo Canyon. The shaded areas were cold, but in the sun it was very tolerable. Lots of wild turkeys on and close to the road. Glad I was able to get out for little while.

Yea , I know . Fortunately the ride in is mostly flat. I am working on a different freewheel. Most of my other steeds have at least a 26 big gear in the back. That freewheel is from my early years! The bike came with a Regina "cob" with an 18 large, so"not going to happen". I can ride it the way it is , just stay away from large hills for sure , Joe

Thursday did the usual evening Davis Is. ride for 27 miles. A stronger cold front finally made it to our area on Friday. The roads were still wet and it was a bit gloomy on Saturday, but I did 40 miles out to Thonotosassa and back. Sunday I rode out to Upper Tampa Bay trail for 44 miles. The weather was perfect. Clear blue skies and the low 60's. A bit windy though.
