Would Heras win if Lance led him?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Would Heras win if Lance led him?

The press coverage of Lance's latest stage win today suggests that Lance outpaced everyone at the end, which he did. But I wonder, if Heras had the benefit of Lance and other USPS team members leading him through the stage, would he not sprint to the finish with just as much pep?

I believe Heras is a great cyclist and no doubt did his job yesterday as a Domistique. He carried Lance up that last climb. Could Heras have sprinted to the win if the situation were flip-flopped? I think, "YES"!

However, I don't think Heras is as good an all-around cyclists as Lance. I do believe that he's very close and could easily become a captain of another team. It wouldn't surprise my if he went the way Tyler Hamilton did next year!

Heras is a great climber and would certainly be a potential stage winner. It would be interesting to see him competing against Armstrong.

As I understand it, the race is a well planned team effort. I expect the team has made a judgement that Lance has the best chance overall for the GC vistory and has trained and organized itself to bring about that result.

From what I have observed, there are several riders including Heras who might secure a win, were others, including Lance to decide to work toward that end.

The judgement that Lance is the all around best cyclist is one with which I agree. Consequently, I suggest that while Heras might win with Lance's help; Lance, as is being proven, is very likely to win with Heras' help.

I beleive Heras was taken in by Postal is primarily to help Lance secure his Tour win, there is no If's or but here, Heras Time is to win the Vuelta andThe U.S. .Postal Team is going to be doing everything to win the Vuerlta for Heras, that was their deal

Heras appears to be a great climber, but he doesn't quite have what it takes to be a champion, yet. If he could beat Lance, don't you think that he would have been up with the top 3 at the close of Monday's stage? Even under team orders, he could lead Lance closer to the finish. I understand the tactic of not pulling Beloki up to Lance, but if Heras were closer in ability (to Lance) then they both could have broken Beloki with their speed. I'm not convinced that Heras is in the same class as Virenque and others (yet).

I think if a team was picked just to support him he could finish on the podium next year, but if money were no object others could too, I don't think there is a salery cap in pro cycling so maybe the way to defeat Lance is take away his very capable workers, I don't see that hapening tho. I do hope there are good placeings for the rest of Postal for the balance of the year.
