ENVE's hookless rims -- what tires CAN you use?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ENVE's hookless rims -- what tires CAN you use?

I've been looking at the ENVE hookless rim wheels, and it seems the list of incompatible tires is pretty long. No tubed tires. No Conti. And no to a lot of others. What decent, fast tires CAN you use on ENVE's hookless rims?

Seems like you've probably seen ENVE's list, but posting below for posterity. Not terribly extensive, but there are some options out there. I'm going to run the new Schwalbe Pro Ones on my 4.5 ARs when they arrive... we'll see how they go. I'm a little nervous about durability.

IRCs are excellent tires. Almost as fast as Pro Ones, but you can take them off the pavement.

I have been using 28mm Pro Ones. I really like them.
They seem to be fast and last ok. They also seem alright on the gravel as long as it isn't too rough.
But I wouldn't want to use wheels this expensive on rough gravel with 28mm tyres anyway.

jkonst, thanks for including the "approved" list. I had only seen the "incompatible" list in the past.

Since my favorite tires are on the "incompatible" list, I've decided to go with Mavic UST wheels. They'll take just about anything -- even tubed, if I need them to.

If your worry is lack of tire options...Mavic UST wheels are worse. The number of companies selling UST tires is one (Mavic).

Yes you can run non-UST tires on Mavics.....but those supposed benefits of running UST wheels vanish and they're just another wheelset.....with hard and expensive to supply spare parts.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. I've used Mavic's UST wheels with non-UST tires and they work very well. If you use quality tires on them, there is no difference between an UST and a non-UST tire on a Mavic UST rim. They just work. And "hard and expensive to supply spare parts?" You're not serious. Did you forget the meds?

A hookless rim is very limiting, by their own admission. (But it IS cheaper to manufacture. I don't begrudge them that. The same rationale brought us press-fit bottom brackets!)

Indeed, the Doctor is still alive. Trying to stay away from self-correcting wheelsets.

You're arguing with me, by repeating what I just said and you quoted. FYI. IOW, you're agreeing with me.

Try getting a spare spoke or rim or pawl. Good luck.

Not on meds at all--I've been there. Have a nice day.

If you are talking about getting Mavic spare parts, you are absolutely correct. It's a PITA to deal with Mavic customer service, and it's never quick or cheap.

Really? I've never had a problem. My LBS stocks the spokes. But I've never broken anything else on a Mavic wheel.

Of course, if you're trying to play off Mavic against ENVE, you're out of luck these days. They have common ownership now and, it seems to me, ENVE customer service (which used to be far-and-away best in the industry) seems to be slipping somewhat. My last couple experiences with ENVE customer service have not been wonderful. Response time with ENVE customer service used to be within hours -- 24 at the very most. Nowadays, you might have to wait 7 to 10 days to get a response from them.

Perhaps the long term strategy is that ENVE does hookless tubeless wheels and Mavic keeps the hooked / UST market.

Amer Sports sold Mavic to Regent LP back in March, So Enve and Mavic are no longer owned by the same company.

I missed that. Thanks for posting it. (But ENVE's customer service is still looking a lot more like Mavics' these days.)

I contacted them Monday about a warranty replacement, and received a response from them the same day. They are shipping out a replacement wheelset today, and we will return the old wheelset when the customer comes in for the swap.

That sounds closer to the old ENVE. Very different than what I have experienced from them recently. Hopefully, they're bringing it back around.

But I'm disappointed by their decision to go hookless. I understand the desire for cutting costs and increasing profitability but, as with press fit bottom brackets, it comes at the expense of a lot of customers and potential customers. If the rest of the industry falls into line (as they did with press fit bottom brackets), ENVE will be fine. (But that doesn't mean I like it.)

I'm not a fan of hookless on road bikes either, and it's one of the reasons that I went with Light Bicycle wheels. The fact that I could get 2 LB wheelsets, for the price of 1 Enve wheelset, didn't hurt either.

Sounds like Noodle is coming from standpoint of getting Mavic to respond to a retailer of their products, while maybe Flash is referring to consumer direct support enquiries?

that is correct. Most of my experience with Enve is as a bicycle manufacturer buying wheelsets and CF tubing.
