Your Weekend Ride Reports -- December 28/29

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekend Ride Reports -- December 28/29

I forgot it was the weekend!

Did you get some good cycling in over Christmas and on this weekend? Other sports?

Just about 20 miles both days with some, for me, anyway, pretty tough hill repeats thrown in. Trying to step up my hill game.

I just wrapped up my Festive 500 today (500km total between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve), riding somewhere between 60 and 110km each day since Christmas Eve. I'm looking forward to taking tomorrow off.

Glad to hear of your biopsy results. Moles are not to be fooled with, always good to have them checked. I’ve been dealing with skin cancer for 25 years. Scuamos cell and basil cell carcinoma. Had a good size chunk removed from my leg a few weeks ago. I am glad to be riding still. This morning was no exception . Did a nice ride to the harbor through miles of citrus in Santa Paula all the way to the coast. Cold in the morning for sure.

26 miles Christmas evening, mostly one last look at the holiday light displays along a favorite rural route. Good hill climbing workout there too. Lots of short, steep double digit hillettes.

38 miles Friday night, big casual group ride. One of the rare occasions I've taken a road bike to those instead of my hybrid. Reminded me why I prefer the hybrid for casual group rides in the city.

28 miles Sunday. Breezy, chilly, but chasing some new PRs. I underestimated my legs and was too cautious on the first try, only got my 3rd best time. So I looped back around for another go at a shorter version and got a couple of PRs. Felt pretty good.

I've been working hard on strengthening my legs and didn't quite trust them today, but they're improving. Bothers me when I find my knees wobbling even slightly when I stand up after sitting for a while, or getting up from bed in the middle of the night. That's when silly stuff happens, like falling in the bathroom. So I'm working more on basic leg strength and balance stuff, off the bike.

Found a few dry hours during nonstop days of rain ... also go t soaked once. Short rides, and pitifully slow, but bike rides .....

40 mile solo ride on Saturday. Plenty of headwinds, thought it was just me but happy to find out that most on Strava riding in the same hood were also commenting on the headwind.

Part of my Christmas present from my 37 year old daughter was this silicone hanging balls taillight. Didn't need it on a day ride but testing it out to see how it reacts (falls apart/ falls off/ you know!).

But I am happy to say that after the first 30 miles, my hanging balls were still clean!

Weird December weather. Not hot, but really muggy. Off and on rain this past weekend too. Spent most of the time dodging rain and puddles. Saturday did my S. Tampa Picnic to Davis Is. ride for 41 miles. Sunday was a repeat with a slightly different route for 43 miles.

took my mountain bike out on the 28th & forgot to swap the bar mitts over from the studded bike. I was only wearing lightweight gloves. new for me, to be using 2 straight bar bikes, for the winter. turned out to be OK cuz it was 46 F degrees & sunny!

Got out Sunday & managed to leave just as it started to rain, which continued the whole ride.

43, 2,300', 48˚

No pics- the gloves make it inconvenient to operate a camera.

I did a group ride on Saturday at the end of my rest week, so the legs felt like rubber dogpoo. It was 34 degrees and the fog was thick enough to stick to us, making everyone very wet and very cold. I'll definitely be happy to get back on my rollers with Zwift this week because the weather looks atrocious.

Also, this guy is a beast. He's 70 and still hangs with the fast dudes while rocking full fenders.

Sat: was home at my moms with gf and we did 30mi on one of my old routes i used to ride all the time in RI. Had forgotten to put the 10 speed spacer on my wheel so it was one rattly ride but shifted/rode fine just noisy. went to my old shop after and they put one on for me so i could do my ride sunday with more quiet.

Sun: 32mi ride with my old riding club. had about 8 of us in the front group for a while then half took a wrong turn. finished with 4 of us and then enjoyed some hot chocolate and cup o' noodles one of the guys had brought for everyone

Wed: did the Le Col 100k ride today on Zwift. was probably not the best plan since i was still tired from sundays ride and a kinda nutty day at work yesterday but now i have a one in few thousand chance to win some swag lol. 5500' of climbing added up quick and now i'm sitting on the couch with the normatec trying it's best to help with recovery. Have tomorrow off so a short spin will be in order.

Biking buddy just told me about the hanging ball-sack and commented that I could once again claim to have "a pair" if I got them since I've been riding light thanks to my prostate cancer.

This is the first 50 km bicycle ride we have done since before Rowan's accident! It was a bit of a challenge because of 28 km/h to 40 km/h wind. My legs weren't happy on the way out!

A vegetation fire started up about when we left and the road we used on the way back was closed for a bit. But when we got back to that point, they'd got it under control and had opened the road. Those things move fast!

Winds 10/15mph this morning making today's 110 miles a bit tiresome. Laundry is done so now for a bike ride to Walmart for some food shopping then time for a nap.
