Is a 2004 Trek 5900 for $1k a good deal?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have the option of buying a Trek 5900 for $1k. I'm not sure if I even need people to tell me whether or not this is a good deal...but what do you guys think?

If it is in very good condition and not stolen, that is a great deal. Of course, you need to be very careful when buying any used carbon bike components since crash damage may be difficult to see.

Agreed.

Do you know the history of the bike?

It has been ridden by a 'friend of a friend'...I know he is a regular racer with a good history...however, I was worried about the same issue Johnny brought up about crash damage. Perhaps I'll just take it for a few rides! Thanks guys!

If this person is truly an knowledgeable racer, then he know's it's worth a lot more, unless there is more to the story....move with care!

Hmm...now that I've got myself away from the joy of thinking I could get a 5900 for 1k, I'm starting to smell something fishy going on.....

See if he'll agree to having a qualified mechanic/Trek representative inspect it for damage.

Yes, move with care, but.....

I bought my full DA Giant TCR 0 for only $800 from a personal friend who races a lot (category 1). He sold me the bike for that price because he wanted to see me get into riding/racing and he happened to have a garage full of bikes/frames. If the seller is a good friend of yours, you should know him well enough to have an idea as to his real incentives. Good luck.
