Shimano SPD-SL Pedals More Expensive Than Ever?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh geeze, I just went and looked and nearly bought a pile of half priced castelli stuff I don't need.

Back in ~2012 105 pedals were about 35$. Is Tiagra the new 105?

I didn't say they were cheap, just that there were places that you could get them.

EDIT: Dura Ace pedals cost $280 at Excel Sports today.

Yeah, last time I bought pedals from Merlin in the UK they were Ultegra and cost $55, that was in 2015. Prices are going up uniformly, even from the cheap UK guys.

Damn it - would you stop spreading the word? I assume that this is a loophole that's gone unnoticed and that it'll get shut down when it does come to Shimano's attention.

Yeah, fair enough.

However, you know who will also ship you a cheap pair of Shimano pedals from the UK? Amazon. I don't mean Amazon.co.uk either, I mean US Amazon. If you search for Ultegra pedals, they come up as an "Amazon Global" product shipped from the UK for $77 + shipping.

Nice. Yeah, I'd seen a couple deals like that on Amazon, but the quoted shipping times kinda scared me off. Maybe it was just the products that I was lookin' at, though.

Honestly? Yeah...kinda. If you look at the progression of the quality of gear over the last decade, the gap between the top and bottom is shrinking

Jeepers! I got a pair of R540 for $5.99, new, a couple of years ago. It was some really crazy deal, but even then, the normal price was maybe $30-$35.

I've been meaning to upgrade to something lighter, but I don't know if it's worth it now.

I started some years ago with R540s, and then switched to 105s. Later, I treated myself to Dura Ace pedals, and to me they were worth the difference.

Then I switched to Favero Assioma's, because, well, power meters. And though I like having a meter, I miss the feel of those D-A pedals. Of all the pedals I've ridden, it was the D-A that had the perfect balancing. When starting from a traffic light, the D-A always were hanging in the right position and I clipped in perfectly. Maybe it's just me, but no other pedal has been so smooth in that way.

Amazon et al are flooded with cheepo chinese knock-offs of SPD-SL cleats and now pedals I've noticed. The cleats I know are no good, they break really easy, I think because they use a cheap plastic. Hopefully you have better luck with the pedals.

Yeah, I've heard about the cheap cleats, and will be tossing those into the trash. Genuine Shimano cleats were available on AliExpress for about $6 a pair last summer(now $9), so I stocked up.

The pedals look pretty nice actually, but after testing for a few weeks, they'll go onto my classic Guerciotti which is very rarely used.

How do you know they're genuine? Last time I bought Shimano cleats off Amazon, they were fakes, in fake Shimano packaging and everything.

how do you know the ones you got are fake?

Genuine or counterfeit, the ones I bought were good quality, and performed well.

FTR, the pedals are crap.

they wobbled while I was installing them, so I’ll return them. We’ll see how that goes.
