Ultegra and Dura Ace Cranks - Ugly?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ultegra and Dura Ace Cranks - Ugly?

Am I the only one who thinks the Ultegra and Dura Ace cranks look ugly? Regardless of true weight, they look heavy to me. The 105 and all the carbon cranks look much better to me. I am not just into black components either. I think the shiny Campy stuff looks cool. I think it is the huge shiny surface area that turns me off. I have seen many nice looking bikes ruined with these shiny blobs on the side. What do you think?

I agree, the Dura-Ace and Ultegra cranks are a work of art. Of course I am more interested in performance than aesthetics, yet these amply pass muster on both accounts. Anything that performs like these cranks is beautiful, a real work of art.

One of my bikes has DA cranks, but another has FSA carbon cranks that look better.

I think that my son's DA10 cranks look beautiful. I also think that my Ultegra 10 cranks look like they're made of some really cheap metal. (to compensate for my cheaper gruppo, I got a carbon bike - it's required that I spend more than he did, an OCP think, I believe)

Yeah to me Dura Ace looks like some smouldering metal that is being poured. I can't decide if they're really cool or really ugly (though if I'm asking this question, it is mostlikely the latter).

aesthetics can be so subjective. I think the crank is hideous. If asked why, I doubt I could give much of an answer.

When I first saw a picture of them I didn't like them. Then I got to hold them, caress them, love them. Unfortunately I don't earn enough to own them. I need a better job...and a trophy wife.

I like both of those cranks. Form follows function and if they look heavy becasue they are hollow and it makes them stronger then so be it.

I'm excited about that group though because it will bring a lot of quality from the upper groups to the everyday stuff.

The chainring is something only a mother could love I agree, but the crank arms themselves look just as good as the other 10s cranks.

Simple fix for the 105 10s chainring is a 10s ultegra chainring (the cleanest looking of the bunch)

When my ultegra 9s wears out I may be using that 10s 105 or Campy. We'll see.

Looks like a track bike almost with the "mono" chainring look.

To each, his own. I love the look of the 2005 Dura-Ace cranks. This thread has inspired me to purchase a set

The 7800 Dura Ace crank is a beast and a beauty. A super-stiff, solid crank/bottom bracket combo that can't be beat, except by certain carbon compacts.

For the people who do not like the look of the Dura-Ace crank, what is your preference in terms of looks? I have been looking into replacing my current crankset for the last month. No matter what happens I come back to the Dura-Ace crank.
