Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike too big? 6'1" on a 60cm Trek

Okay, I know the real answer: Get a proper fitting. But b efore I plunk down $50 - $75, I thought I would take a quick poll. As of late, I've become a little self-concious about my 60cm frame. Seems that practically nobody rides one. I've had no real problems, although I do fail the old line of sight test (when in the drops, intersection of stem and handlebar should obscure hub?). I've only had the bike for six months, so I'm not sure what "right" actually feels like. I thought everything was great until I saw someone get an actual fitting (ignorance sometimes is bliss). Now I'm not sure if I'm getting the optimal riding position. Any comments? For what it's worth, I do wear about a 36-37in. sleeve, which gives me a reach longer than most. Feel free to tell me I'm overthinking this and to just enjoy the bike, but if any of you are about my size and ride a 60cm bike please speak up. Thanks in advance.

I'm about that height and riding a 61cm LeMond, fits me just right. If you're failing the line of sight test you can always look at stems with different reach on them. You can also do the plumb bob test to make sure your saddle is set properly on the rails.

Plenty of people insist on bikes that are way too small for 'em, and the average pro is what...5'8" or something? The long head tube looks kinda funky to me too, but the bike fits, I'm happy when I'm riding it so I don't let it get to me.

Is your standover height ok? Can you lift the bike up a few inches when standing?

I'm just over 6'1" and ride a 60 cm frame.
The bike shop you bought the bike at should do a basic fitting for free (seat height, seat back & forth, cleats on shoes) If not, come out here to Loveland and our local shop will still do the basic for free, even if you didn't buy it from them (Peleton Cycles)

When I stand over the bike barefoot I get maybe a smidge over 1" clear. When I'm wearing shoes and cleats I've got 2+" to lift the bike off the ground. Does that line of sight test hold true for all types of frames? (Mine is a Trek 2300)

I'm around 6'1" - 6'2" and I ride 58-59cm

I think it depends on inseam and reach, height is relative, you could have long torso, etc

that doesn't sound to big, top tube could be too long, but your standover sounds legit

I ride a Trek 60 (6’1" 34"pantseam 185# shirt sleeve36) some shops had me on a 58 which may have been ok, but I was not going to buy until I road a 60. The 60 just felt more natural for me, opposed to the more compact feeling on the 58. It was also my experience that Trek sizes ran a little smaller then some other brands I tired. I had some trouble finding a 60. I got lucky one day and found a 58 & 60 at the same store so I could test both at the same time.
Enjoy yourself; go to the shop to get your fit fine-tuned.

I'm 6' 1.75" tall, 32" inseam. 36" sleaves (long torso, short legs).
I had a 58cm 5200 for a while and found it too small (no matter how it was adjusted).
The 60cm 5200 I replaced it with fits like a glove (after a pro adjustment).
The 60cm also had wider handlebars which let me breathe easier (I have a wider chest cavity).

Hope that helps.

Go to this site do the measurements and see what you measure out too. It's the closest you will get without having your LBS do it. And even sometimes they do a bad job. It told me I was a 58 and I am 6'1. So give it a shot and good luck. Stay safe!!!

Okay, I'm starting to feel a little better now. Looks like I'm not the only one on a 60cm out there. Maybe all I need is a little fine tuning then

I'm 6' tall and ride a 60cm Trek. I pass the line of sight test. It feels great.
I tried a 59cm LeMond which seemed too big.

I cannot add too much to what has already been stated other than I wonder if you are more self-conscious in mind than you are in body. What I mean is, should you be asking your head (comparing what you see other riders ride, etc?) or what your body is telling you? Some folks like to be more stretched out when they ride, some more upright, etc. I recommend the bike fit and a good dose of self awareness...

Oh, I am about 6'2 (with a long torso) and I ride a 60 as well. Good luck.

Those are practically my exact measuremrnts. Thanks all. I think that about settles it. Listen to the body. Do some fine tuning. Enjoy the bike. You've all proved once again what a great resource this forum is. Thanks for the encouragement!

you probably don't see a lot of people riding a 60 cm because a lot of bikes are measured differently. Trek measures their frames from the center of the BB to the top of the seat collar. A 60 cm Trek is really more like a 57-57.5 cm seat tube. They do tend to have slightly longish top tubes when compared to other bikes of similar size. I am 5'11" and ride a 56 cm bike measured center of BB to center of top tube. I fit well on a 58cm Trek. 60 cm sounds like the right bike for you at least as a starting point.

I'm 6'1" and I ride one 60cm bike, 2 58cm bikes and 1 56cm bike. The 60 has a 100mm stem, on the 58s I use 110mm and the 56 a 120mm. I've adjusted the seat heights to provide the same distance from the top of the seat to the center of the bottom bracket. Bottom line, they all feel fine, and the 60cm in no way feels too big.

I am 6'2" with a 34 inseam and rided a 60 cm center to center frame with a 59 cm top tube. On the Trek that you speak of, do they measure the frame from center to center or center to top?

I too am about 6'1" or 186cm, and ride a 60cm Trek05 1400 frame. It feels perfect, although it is my first real bike. I tried the 58cm but I just felt to cramped. I do have a long torso and arms.
I only just have 1" clearance from the top tube in bare feet, just over an inch with cleats on the 60cm.
