Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Went out hoping for a nice, easy 30 or so, just to get some blood moving. But it was still only 40F with intermittent rain and gusts to nearly 40 mph. My route was along the river, so, zero wind protection. Miserable conditions. Just was not up for it. I am an admitted wind wimp. Turned around after 30 minutes and came home. I'll ride in anything except ice and big wind. We are very lucky here that it is very seldom so windy. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

I didn't ride a lot this weekend, but I did attack a hill that I haven't had the guts to ride since I got my bike. For one, it's a pretty busy road and I wasn't comfortable riding with all the cars flying past me as I tried not to fall over. Needless to say I ended up shutting my brain off and just going for it and what a treat! Felt great to beat something that had been annoying me for months (I drive this hill every day in the car on the way to work). Anyway, total riding distance...somewhere around 4miles. Haha. On to next week!

I was out of town for the week, but got in three rides in the Ocala Nat Forest. The weather was great. Cool, low wind and sunny. I had my new Lynsky which I got to try out on the hills. All of the rides were around 40 miles.

I did my Sunday ride to the beach in between rain squalls here in Southern California. Nice cool ride hardly any other cyclists out. We are finally getting rain and as long as there are breaks in between to ride I’m ok with it.

Lots of short walks and errand rides, but we were rained out all weekend -- fairly unusual continuous rain, mostly moderate, for three days.

So I made up for it with a 57 mile ride Monday -- cool, cloudy but pleasant, no rain for now. Intended to do only 20 as a tempo paced workout but still felt pretty good and kept going. Did most of the next 37 miles on the local MUP at a very easy pace. Thought about going a bit more but too many slick patches of mud from rain runoff and it was getting harder to see after dusk.

More people than I'd usually expect to see on a Monday, but school's out and some folks are off work due to the Super Cooties virus, so we all had a chance to reinforce our immune systems. That's how it's supposed to work, right? Or maybe I'm mixing up War of the Worlds with real life...
