STP - Forum Member Meeting Options

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

STP - Forum Member Meeting Options

Here are 2 meeting options for anyone doing the STP that wants to ride with us - all day or just a little while.

Option 1 - the Best Western University Towers Hotel. 4507 Brooklyn (at 45th) We will meet out front and leave from there NO LATER THAN 4:15 AM. We will ride the 1.9 miles to the campus....

Option 2 - in the courtyard in front of Hec Edmundson Pavilion on Montlake Blvd. We will gather there and wait 5 minutes before heading over to the lot at 4:40 for a 5 AM start.

Remember, it will be dark and there will be a lot of people - we'll call out for "bike forum members" and hopefully find you.

Good luck and see you there.

and I will be sporting a blue helmet with some reflective tape. yeah it's my only helmet and I commute with it. And I'm riding a Sarthe (orange).

Is the courtyard area south of the parking lot, but north of Husky Stadium? I just want to know exactly where it is in case I miss you at the hotel. Here is a satellite view, for us geographically challenged.

Great... the one year I decide to skip the STP, a bunch of BikeForum members decide to organise a get together. Where were you people the last three years?!?!?! Admittedly, I did get to ride in good company the last couple of STPs and a few of the riders were BikeForum members too. Have fun, be safe and keep the rubber side down!

Here is a map of the campus - Hec Ed is on the lower right of the Southcentral map. Parking lot E1 - the starting line - is just north on Montlake Blvd a couple hundred yards and past the intramurl activities building. You can see it on the second map.

My wife and I are driving up tomorrow, and staying with a friend in north Seattle. I'll plan on meeting at the hotel. If I miss you guys its no big deal, as I don't think I'll be able to keep up for long anyway. But I would like to see everyone again. For me I think this is going to end up a death march. Oh yea baby, i'm ready.

Rad, Thanks for organizing this.

I'll be staying on campus Friday night, so I'll shoot for meeting at Hec Ed. A 10 hr ride time (and it's associated 20 mph average pace) is probably a bit fast for me for that length of time, but maybe we can get a second slightly slower group (17-18 mph) together for the ride.

Even if we only ride a few miles before getting splintered, I encourage you all to try to meet up with us. It's great putting faces to names and whatnot.

Also, remember this. If you can average 17/18 mph on your solo rides AND CAN COMFORTABLY DRAFT, you will be able to hang with us all day.

We will be spending a lot of time in the 24-27 mph range, just being dragged along. It is incredible.

I'm going to try and hook up with ya'll as well. I'm planning on a 5am start but might not be able to make it to the Hec Ed building in time. Could you guys call out a few times near the starting line too? I'll be the guy in a red jersey with a yellow bike.....

With the amount of OCP Club members in this ride, I expect to see some good shots of all of you in front of the Winlock egg!

Option 3 - meet the night before at a strip club I frequent when my wife thinks I'm out riding. Bring your bikes because we may or may not ride in the morning depending on how many dollar bills we go through.

Remember, it will be dark and there will be a lot of people - we'll call out for "bike forum members" and hopefully find you.

Good luck and see you there.

you need a more distinctive way to recognize each other. how about the gomer pyle/sergeant carter war games call: 'hooty-hoot! hooty-hoot!'

For those of you riding the STP for the first time and wondering what it's like, check out my pictures from the 2003 STP which I've also annotated. The main album is broken down into two sub-albums (one for each day).
