USCF category upgrades?
I was just reading the USCF rules for category upgrades and it said that to upgrade from cat 5 to cat 4 i need 10 mass start races, but does this only include races that you finish? So if you get dropped or crash during the race does this not count towards the 10 races?

i believe you only have to start them. i got dropped and didn't finish a couple of my races, but i'm still planning on including them on my resume for when i upgrade.

Well, not to be a jerk but if you get dropped in a 5's race why would you upgrade?

i have a question. I also race juniors. do junior crits and rr's count as my 10 mass start races. I don't see any reasons why they shouldn't, but i have heard different responses from different people.

Here is a perspective...
Around here 4 and 5 race together 50% or more of the time, 4 is not much different than 5, just more experience in 4. Basically if you can hang in a 4/5 you will have NO problem in 4's. The rule is you need 10 mass STARTs not finishes to upgrade. Personally I have approximatly 15 races under my belt, I have finished 5 of them, the other ones I got dropped at various parts of the race, from the second lap in my first race, till more commonly in the pack sprint. After a good off season I will be more than ready for 4, so I am upgrading at the end of the season. The sooner you get into 4 the sooner you start earning points to a 3 upgrade, etc etc. If you can hang with the 5's you should have no problems in 4, at least here in socal... |

If you never want to upgrade, can you stay in 5s far past 10 mass starts? (Not that you'd want to, just wondering)

Very very interesting...
You could theoretically sandbag in cat 5 (I know it happens), but since there are no cash prizes in 5 it is pointless. Now in cat 3 there is a lot of sandbagging because people do not want to move to cat 1 -2 pro races (which I understand are significantly faster)... They have a cat 5 so that people can get into the sport and try out a race. Here it seems since bike riding is not so much the norm they want to get as many racers and riders on the scene. Five is a crash and drop fest here, and they want to get the 4's with the 5's... we all know that... |

Well CBR races count I would think collegiate races would also...

I don't think that collegiate races technically count, but the system is very flexible, so go ahead and put them down anyways. Chances are, you'll get upgraded. The disctrict USCF official who approves the upgrades just wants to know that you have some experience, and a few good results in Cat 5 should be more than enough to get you upgraded.
I heard of a guy once who talked his way all the way up to Cat 1, with no real results to speak of. This guy was fast, but he never won anything. It's all up to the official. |
You do not technically ever have to WIN a race to become cat 1 - 4, just collect enough upgrade points. You get something like 5 points for a second and on down so if you can get in the top 7 or so you can eventually get an upgrade...
