Speedplay Zero unclip when I stand
I have the previous Zero's without the walking cleat and my knees love them. I was on a ride yesterday and when I stood up to stretch my back my right foot unclipped. Luckily I did not have all my weight on that side or it could have been a bad situation. I have been off the bike for a couple years but when it happened I did remember it happening once before.
It's possible that when I stand I twist my foot causing me to unclip but it does concern me especially if it happened while really cranking on the pedals. I did stand again and was very cautious about twisting my foot and did not unclip. Has anyone else had this happen?

I haven't checked float since I originally set them. I will check that out today. It was weird when it happened, I did not even feel it unclip but suddenly I was not clipped in.

I stopped using them when I was spinning out down a fast descent and my foot popped out and into the front spokes. This happened to a lot of people and that is why they have not become the big hit they were when first introduced.

Never heard of this until now. Myself and several people I ride with run speedplay and have never come unclipped except on purpose.

Don't get me wrong, I love these pedals. I don't want to change back to Ultegras or Look but thought this was weird. This is probably all me or like WhyFi said I may need to adjust float on the right cleat.
And I have never heard (until now) of anyone coming unclipped while spinning down hill and foot going into the spokes. How would that even happen?

FWIW, speedplay also sells a "Track/Sprint" edition Zero pedal, that has a stiffer spring and is by design harder to unclip from.

I was definitely clipped in and this was about 8 miles into a 12 mile ride.

I checked the float and had more than enough but my right cleat unclips very easily with very little effort when I rotate heel out. I can easily retract the spring with my thumb on the right. I guess I need new cleats?

Is it broken? My zero cleats don't last 1/5th as long as my old school X1 cleats. The tip breaks off. My zero cleats are lasting a bit longer now that I lube them every time I ride.

It doesn't appear to be broken but I can open that right spring easily with my thumb and the left one I can barely move without a lot of pressure.

Yep, the solution for you is probably new cleats. Those little leaf springs don't last forever. I broke one once and didn't even notice for a while (until I took them apart to clean them)

I've been using Zeros for more than a decade and never had this happen.

I have been cycling for over 40 years. This was after I raced cars, motorcycles and sailboats. I raced bicycles until an accident developing a product for the US military injured my lungs. This reduced me to sport riding, long distance touring and building bikes from components. Since you seem to think that it is "weird" to spin out of a pedal I have to wonder if you've ever ridden much.

Replacing the cleat should do it, and was the first thing that ran through my mind when I read the title of your post. We sell a lot of Speedplay pedals and cleats and your issue is almost always resolved with cleat replacement.

Bottom line is new cleats are ordered from REI and should be here on Tues or Wed along with a new pair of Shimano RC701 shoes.

I've been cycling for over 40 yrs. and using Speedpay for many of those years. All my ex-racer friends (local racers) use them. In that time I have never seen or heard of what you have posted above. So, I must not know the " a lot of people" you know.

Considering how much lighter the Speedplays were than the Looks of that generation and how much easier they were to get into perhaps you'd like to hazard a guess as to why they never gained that large of an audience?
