You know, I kind of like the lacing, and my wife hates it. That being said, when you have the wheel on your bike, you just flat out dont notice it, and neither do most of your ride partners. I have a set of 50 mm bullet wheels, and I never even notice. Maybe with the front of the disc wheel having the same spoke pattern, it might be more noticeable.

It lets more of the squirrels body get into the wheel before getting cut in half.

I can actually say that i had one go right through, no harm, no foul! I did slow down when it looked like the little bastard was not going to to just run away like usual.

Paired spokes are an antiquated design that only a few manufacturers are holding on to for aesthetic or trademark reasons. They tend to suffer from wheel flex (not always, but often), and the dreaded "break one spoke and the whole wheel becomes unrideable."
Campy has always had the form/function thing, and these wheels serve that purpose well enough.
