Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Indirectly to your Bontrager hub question, I have Project 321 hubs on my Ibis 935 mountain bike rims with the "quiet pawls" option and love them. I can be shooting through the forest with such little sound. Love it. Maybe something similar is at play with the Bontrager loud/quiet hubs. To each their own, but the loud buzzing isn't for me either.

I had never heard of Project 321 until now. Digging into their web site, apparently magnets are the secret to their quiet freehubs.

By using magnets as a pull spring (opposed to mechanical or magnetic push springs) to move pawls into the drive ring, we are able to achieve less drag and less noise than other high speed ratchet mechanisms.

That's really interesting, I had never heard of a magnetic freehub before. Now I'm wondering if this design can be retro-fit into other brands hub's!?!? Seems that Project 321 is primarily a mountain bike company as they don't offer any roadie wheelsets.

I would email them and ask. I know they were intending to release a road hub at some point but their business is so small they probably didn’t think it was worth it.

Maybe they have the blueprints and tooling and can make you a one-off?

Got the Enve 4.5 ARs in (Envy alloy hub, Sapian CX Ray Bladed). Set them up with the IRC Formula Pro RBCC.

1st impressions:
  • The best handling wheel/tire combo I've ever felt. I could corner like never before -- with deep confidence. It took me a few miles to figure out what the "rubbing" sound was when I cornered a little hard. Got off thinking there wasn't enough frame clearance. That wasn't it - probably a cm or more all around. Realized it was the off-center slightly different tread on the IRC tires... After that, I kept cornering more and more aggressively and am sure I was no where near the limit. Never felt even the slightest hint of slip or anything other than being on rails.
  • The most comfortable wheel I've ever ridden. Had substantial cush without hiding or mushing anything. I flew through some rough areas seated where I always slow down and get out of the saddle. I could see one riding longer with the same level of fatigue simply due to the wheels.
  • Climbed very well. Not like a crazy light 900g set of wheels, but not like trying to lug a set of triathlon wheels uphill either.
  • I sensed no flex. I was pulsing on one climb and would see 800w, but I sure didn't sense like it was being absorbed by the wheel.
  • Love the sound of the Envy hub! Muted, very cool sounding. (I'm not a fan of the super loud / hear me coming 1/4 mile away hubs.)
  • The absolute hardest time I've ever had getting a tire on a wheel -- bar none! I had to use every trick I've ever learned. If I slice the tire out on a ride, I'm just calling my wife/friends as I know I am unlikely to ever get it off, get a tube on, and get it back on.
As weird as it may sound, I really wonder what a 5.6 AR or even a 7.8 AR would feel like if one is ever made... Physics may set in and going wider and deeper might get the wheel in some range of negative returns... Don't know, but if a 5.6 AR / 7.6 AR were ever made, curiosity would force me to try a set.

Thanks for your impressions.

Tubeless tire beads usually stretch a bit over time, so I would at least attempt to fix the flat before calling.

Also wrt your thoughts on a deeper AR wheelset: I think most people who are that interested in aerodynamics are still running narrow 23-25mm tires (“measured 25mm” rather than marked 25c). It makes a significant difference.
