Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mechanical Issue-Dropped chains

Hello, I recently bought a 2015 Cannondale SuperSIx Evo Black Inc with Dura Ace 7900 components. My issue is the bike refuses to cross chain and even drops the chain if I forget and accidentally do it. Often going from small front ring to big leads to a drop if the rear derailleur isn't in just the right spot. I don't think it's an issue with the components themselves as I had it checked out and tuned up right after I bought it. My only thoughts are maybe it's a compatibility issue between the older components and this particular frame, or maybe I just need a longer chain? Has anyone had any issues with this or have any suggestions? I'm fairly novice and could use any advice, no matter how basic. Thanks!

Is it dropping the chain at the front chainring or rear cassette? If rear cassette is the number 1 cog or number 11 cog? Could be a limit screw is out of limit. The bike should be able to cross the chain but this is not recommended and I am trying to figure out why you want to do it.

I have seen this issue on that bike.

The customer said that the problem started after about 45k miles, and got worse over time. After checking everything for proper alignment and excessive wear, I installed a new crankset off of a showroom bike. Problem solved. His big chainring had become worn from frequent cross-chaining, and a new big ring was needed.

Difficulty cross-chaining is indicative of excessive chainring teeth wear. Difficulty shifting from small chainring to large chainring is indicative of worn pick-up pins and worn teeth on the large chainring. Recommend replacing large chainring; you'd be best served replacing both chainrings.
