Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Got smoked..felt shame.

as i was doing my thing climbing up a nice 1 mile steady incline near end of my ride Jonny the Wad cyclist zooms by and yells Doing Intervals......i instinctly jump on wheel to save face only to blow up 50 yards later.
Shame.🤥

One thing I have learned in almost 50 years as a cyclist: No matter how good my fitness, there is always someone who is stronger than me

Lesson learned. I do have a problem with the fact that a cyclist would be yelling something to another cyclist though. When I ride, I don't have time to talk, especially not yell.

So you're at the end of your ride and he's 3 miles into his and you have a problem with not being able to beat someone of unknown fitness and no knowing how hard he was trying? Must be rough. So many variables about him you don't know why would it be shameful to be beat at the end of your ride?

Thank you for addressing the pertinent issues - too often, people are concerned with the little stuff and they let the big picture, like waving, go unnoticed.

Time to get that crisis hotline # on speed dial. Don't let that shame become hurtful rage. Better to talk it out with a professional.

Have you thought about golf?

Think about golf.

You're too fat for cycling but probably too thin for golf.

Come on out here to the Left Coast, and you can have some shame-filled rides brought about by children. Any of the kids on Team California Juniors will whiz by you like you're standing still, and they won't even be breathing hard. One of 'em passed me on a climb a couple of weeks ago, and when I looked at the data on the fly-bys, he was making about the same power I was-- but he's half my weight and a third my age. Lost a KOM to another one making a full 150W less than me.

Oh, to be young. And small. And light.

Even with my hamster power and the fact it happens ALL the time it steel feels shameful. There have been some doozies: the dude on a single speed pulling his dog in the cart was a recent highlight.

A group of three wads blew by me last month. I maintained my pace and caught them 9 miles later. They sped up a bit to try to save face, but two bonked and about 1 mile later the third wad pretended he he got a phone call and stopped. :-)
Being 58 years old I have slowed down a bit and usually ride solo. I enjoy getting challenged by other riders who and very close to my own capabilities. The faster ones I just accept that I am slower and keep to my planned routine. No shame in that. :-)

Jumping on someone's wheel uninvited is the shame.

Don't do that. Especially if they're doing a workout.

The guy was actually being nice. He was
doing intervals, and his comment essentially was saying, don’t worry, I can’t keep this pace up for the whole climb either.

Broader point, there will always be people faster and slower than you, but his comment was a friendly gesture.

I decided long ago that each ride has to be a competition against myself, not others... and even then I still come home disappointed an awful lot!

Personal goals. Always somebody faster.

As a point of courtesy, I know it is tough to acknowledge folks when training hard.......but I just kind of nod. I don't do anything to make anyone feel smaller.

If I get passed "standing still" I may even yell out a word of encouragement or support.

That's what's cool about endurance sports, we can feel the hurt just as bad as the pros do (even though we're slow). You can't really go out and dunk like Jordan or smash a serve like Serena. But you can grind your guts out up a climb.

When I see a slower rider hurting up a hill, they could often be hurting worse than I do at any point on my ride. Freaking kudos to that person!

I'll admit that when I'm riding solo and I see another rider ahead of me, the "race is on" even if the other rider has no idea that it is I like chasing down other riders just to give me incentive to ride a little harder than I normally do.
