Well I need a little of advice

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Okay! So I went down to the bike store today to look at an allez sport (Specialized) ($1200 CDN) It was pretty nice although there was TONS of chain chatter, but I think thats because its an abused test ride kinda bike tires looked pretty bad.

I have a few questions. My dad just bought a new mountain bike. What this means is I can have his old one (GT something or other was about $2500 CDN 7 ish years ago (also is full suspension with rear soft suspension too... lots of power loss I am guessing) wheighs in at about 28lbs I am guessing. Has nobby tires on it right now ect ect. Should I just stay with this or do you think the allez sport will be more beneficial.

Lets go over what I want to do with the bike, well, great question, I don't really know. I went down the shoulder of the highway today and found some side roads to just go for a stroll on, but they were very bumpy at parts and the allez would have been kinda uncomfy I think. I want to travel from city to city maybe about 60km a ride or so. I don't know how comfortable I am with riding on the highway yet, but it seemed to be okay today. Where do you guys find nice paved roads! Hard to find

Do you guys figure I should just stick with the bike that dad would let me use, or should I go for a roadbike such as the allez.

BTW, the money is not a problem, I am not strapped for cash, but if any of you guys have experience coming off a mountain bike onto a roadie, I would thank you for your oppinion.

EDIT : ick, a little of advice, woops lol Why can't you edit thread titles I must look like a bonehead haha

Get some good slicks for that bike, and you can do rides like that for the rest of your life on your Dad's old bike. Maybe put some bar ends on for more hand positions on longer rides.

https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqP...jsp?spid=11233

If you hang around here long enough, you'll realize you shouldn't care about looking like a bonehead if you cycle.

I have both a FS mountain bike and a rode bike. It all depends on what you want to do. If you are going to do the majority of your riding on trails or rough roads I would stick with the MB, especially if you are only going to ride short (up to 15 mile rides). If you are going to go on longer rides (20 mile +++) and have some improved roads to ride on go with the road bike.

I have a friend that has the Specialized bike you test rode and he loves the bike. I hope this helps.

I have both and since I have bought my road bike the Mtn bike never gets ridden. I love the speed. Its so much smoother and faster than my Mtn bike which has some 1.5 Avocet cross tires which makes road riding better. As far as roads in my area all of our roads are paved so my road bike does not have any problems.

I agree, there is nothing like the feeling of speed on a road bike. I only ride my MTB from Nov. to Feb. (our winter) when it is too cold to get out on the road.

Oh how I miss Texas winters...

As was noted above, slicks might just be the ticket for what you're wanting to do. I put a set on my wife's mtb and it's really nice to ride!

Oh but the Texas summers are a bugger. It has been at or near 100 since the first of June.

Once you get a road bike the MTB becomes the second bike.

That's for damn sure. Fort Worth born and raised - and I gotta say, I don't miss the summers! However, I do miss the open prairies near my folks' place and the Mexican food.
