Ever use automotive rubbing compound on your bike?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ever use automotive rubbing compound on your bike?

Have any of you ever used automotive rubbing compound on your bike? I have some marred spots (not scratched though) on my clearcoat/paint and was contempating using the same compound I use to rub out scratches on my pickup. Bike's a little marred from traveling on the hitch mount rack. Comments?

Most rubbing compounds are quite coarse so you need to be careful you don't rub through the paint. A polishing compound may be more appropriate.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Does a polishing compound have any grit at all? I've rubbed the frame with bike wash until I couldn't rub anymore, but no luck (The marred spot is in the shape of a Yakima rubber chain strap used to attach the bike to the rack) If it has just a little grit, the polishing compound might be a good option.

I use Kit SCRATCH OUT scratch & haze remover. It's made for clear coat as well as plastics. It works great and is available from ...gulp..... Walmart.

Thanks! That sounds like a great option. I'll be dropping by Wally World to pick some up!

I can also recommend a very good wax after you get the smudge marks out: EagleOne Nanowax. It leaves one of the best finishes I've ever seen, because the particles are very fine and they get down into the micro-scratches.

Oh yeah, works good on cars too, if you have one of the infernal beasts.

Check it out!
