Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

12x142 Thru Axle Trainer Wheel

I just bought a Giant with a 12x142 thru axle rear hub standard, and now I'm trying to buy a dedicated trainer wheel.

I'm about to buy this wheel, the only downside is that the rim internal width is 19mm, which means that if I want to comply with this tire width compatibility chart, I'll have to throw out my 700x23 trainer tire, and find a 700x25 trainer tire. 25mm trainer tires are rare, if anyone has any suggestions, talk to me.

This is another cheap rear wheel, but it's even wider. Yet another wheel, also too wide.

If anyone knows of any affordable road wheels with 12x142 hubs and a rim width between 15 and 17, I'm all ears.

BTW, If you're wondering how I'll fit a road cassette on this MTB hub, I have a CS-HG700-11 cassette, which is designed to do just that.

I really wouldn't sweat that chart; people routinely put 23mm tires on 19-21mm internal rims.

+1

Just don't corner hard on it and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the feedback, this pretty much eliminates my issue. I can get the cheapo Shimano wheel, put my current 700x23 tire on it, pick up a trainer axle, and I'm golden!

I'll try not to corner too hard on my trainer!
