Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Heart Rate Monitor suggestions.

Well another HRM has officially crapped out on me. So far, I have tried the D-base DB400 and the Sigma Sport PC3.

I need 1 feature in my next HRM and it will never be listed on any product information spec sheet. This is why I need you guys. I want to be able to look down at the display and see my heartrate, all of the time. Key words here are 'all of the time'. I am tired of seeing bogus numbers, no numbers, and constant numbers under varying conditions.

All I want is to know my heartrate now, nothing else aside from a stopwatch.

So what brand HRM is the most reliable and accurate in the entry level models?

I use a fairly basic Sports Instrument HRM and have never seen bogus HR numbers. I don't normally ride under high power lines, in front of cell phone antennas, or in other areas with extremely high interference problems, though.

I have a VDO Bike Computer with HRM and it works great. The only issue I have ever had us passing under high power overhead wires.

I got the Polar FS1 about 2 weeks ago, another basic wrist watch model but I haven't seen any bogus numbers yet. The only thing I did notice was when the exercise timer hit 30 minutes it beeped once and started showing the elapsed time. I only noticed this once after using it on half a dozen or so rides, so it must switch back to the heart rate eventually. I ended up fiddling with it to try to get it to show my heart rate again and ended up resetting the timer so I'm not sure how long it stays up there.

I'm pleased with the unit; simple, one button and a good sized display showing nothing but your heart rate.
