Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First fake ride of the season done. I have some frustration with Zwift, and I suppose I just have to accept and live with it.

Main issue is as follows:

My internet (Verizon FIOS) has a quirk in that the signal freezes for 1-2 seconds every 15 minutes or so. Because of buffers etc. it's not really a problem with streaming videos or most applications, but if FORCES zwift to think that my power is zero for a second. The game even loses my "momentum" when this happens. Since Zwift seems to exaggerate the effect of the group draft, this means that if I am with a group when the signal goes and (henceforth called a digital chain drop) I am almost certainly dropped by the group and have to put in a very large/hard effort to get back with them. It's not a problem if there are several smaller groups or a grupetto, but most Zwift group rides seem to have one main group.

For the rides I choose, I typically aim for something I think is at my level, i.e. stated pace around 80-90% of my FTP. When I have a digital chain drop, if I want to get back to the group I have to pretty much sprint (typically 150%+ my FTP) for 10s or so, and although I can do this it is so taxing that afterwards, even maintaining 85% of FTP is a challenge. If it happens early into a ride I may end up getting dropped anyway even after I bridge to the group, depending on the pace.

On today's ride, it happened a few minutes into the ride and I was able to get back on, but it happened again 15 minutes into the ride and I could not do it. It's hard to say how much of the difficulty maintaining 85% of FTP after an all-out effort is physiologic and how much is mental, as I do find it demoralizing.

Given that I cannot fix the internet digital chain drop issue (I have wasted hours with Verizon and get nowhere, they insist it's in my house and it's not), any suggestions on how to enjoy Zwift group rides other than sign up for "easier" ones??

Frankly I feel a little bad that I've had things shipped, feeling a wee bit complicit in the suffering of others. It's got to suck working at a shipping carrier right now.

On the other hand, my frameset is on track to arrive Friday

I'm going to guess, it's not an internet connection issue, but rather a machine performance issue. What hardware are you running zwift on? Can you disable other software that might be running in the background on your Zwift machine
If using ANT+ for connection to the trainer, is the ANT+ dongle close to the trainer? Certain wireless frequencies can interfere with that connection. I have my ANT+ dongle on a USB extension and only about a foot away from the trainer at knee level.

One more thought is can you hard wire your Zwift machine to your Verizon router with an Ethernet cable instead of a wireless connection?

Also, I think I remember you have an iPhone. You can install the zwift app ( as well as the companion app) on the phone and run zwift from your phone as a test. You could try with the phone connected to your home wifi and again disconnected from wifi using only your phone data connection. This means only Bluetooth connections for use with the phone though.

I am an open-minded person, so the problem could be with my devices. However, we have noticed while watching streaming videos that every 10-15 minutes we get a "flash message" saying no internet for 1 second. The timing frequency is pretty much the same as when I am zwifting so I still think internet freeze/drop is the problem. I can try using the app on the iphone instead of the computer but I am pretty much resigned to the "digital chain drop" issue. Luckily I don't take Zwift seriously and just want to keep entertained and maintain fitness, so I am not too bothered by it. Just annoyed.

Are these devices (Macbook and streaming video hardware) both connected wirelessly to the network?

I am hoping we get enough snow by 4 PM so I can go out and XC ski some before dark. The nordic skis are waxed and ready to go!

Yes. But signal drop has happened even to desktop computer when it was wired directly to the network. So I am fairly sure signal drop is from Verizon. Impossible to prove and as above it's a minor nuisance and not worth wasting more hours of my time.
