Notices
Road Cycling ďIt is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.Ē -- Ernest Hemingway

I guess he has a coin on both sides of the brake bridge, I didn't see the front one at first glance.

You see, I can see this rationale. If you have a tangible event to train for or just stay in shape for then there's a tangible reason for suffering the indoor boredom. But to pursue mind-numbing indoor training routinely just so I'm not out of shape in the spring, like I've heard some guys explain, then I have to ask myself ... What's worse, getting back in shape in the spring or being bored to tears 3 or 4 days a week in the winter?

I'll take the spring catchup any day . . . I'm outdoors, the weather is ideal, the birds are singing, there's a real breeze on my cheeks, there's a changing terrain and changing scenery. What's not to like?

I'm not criticizing, you understand, I'm just describing me. I'm a firm believer in DSFTF, to each his own.

I understand that, and I certainly wasn't trying to criticize anyone earlier. Just a morning rant/thinking out loud thing.

When I ride from home I pass an area where a lot of commercial trucks are parked on the street. On the back door of one of the trucks someone had painted a 6'x6' mural of a woman's face, smiling with little stars floating around her. To me, it's hideous. I mean like disturbingly ugly, so that it haunts me later. When I ride by there I force myself to look away yet I still see it in my peripheral vision.

Today when I passed it there was a banner with the name and number of the business covering the hurl-inducing mural. A nice step in the right direction.

I ordered some bike parts from ScamBay and they were shipped USPS 12/5 via "two day priority mail," they arrived YESTERDAY. So it took 2 weeks, not 2 days.

QED the rumors of USPS being backed up are true, at least for this n=1.

I've gone both routes - getting back in to shape is far worse than 4-6 hours per week on the trainer.

Unless you're *really* hitting the off-season workout, you're still going to have a period in the spring where you get your legs and lungs back under you. Much of the early riding season isn't that fantastic (though you're still happy to be out), but it's not unusual to come in to peak form as late as mid-summer (at least in these northern latitudes). If you take the winter off, that window of poor form can easily to stretch through most of the prime riding season, 'specially if you gain 10-15 lbs. It's horrible to still feel like you're slogging when the weather's nice.

Of course, all of this depends upon the individual's definition of "in shape." If it's being able to finish a 30 mile ride without feeling like you need to take it easy the rest of the day, that's one thing. If it's being able to ride a 100 miles at the drop of a hat and do it under a self-imposed time limit, it's another matter altogether. The same with crushing the souls of your friends on the group ride. Racing? Sheesh, I'd be in the garage hitting the weights with LAJ right now.

When youíre a certain age, the risk is that you will not get it back in the spring or ever. This is particularly true for VO2max and if you donít maintain the base, itís impossible to do the high intensity workouts. Itís also harder to gain back muscle and lose fat. The young guys can goof off all they want.

Listening to the Seahawks vs THE FOOTBALL TEAM on the radio.

Luckily even after a terrible spot and a terrible call, the Seahawks stopped the Team, and just have to kill 51 seconds.

Whew.

SF/Dallas went south after 2 interceptions thrown by SF. Switching to Rams/Jets.

$50 worth of reward points were set to expire at my LLS tomorrow, so I picked up a couple necessary bottles. I haven't had either, but...

a) the gin is supposedly local and, I mean, just lookit the label!
b) I've had and enjoyed other Suntory products.
