Addiction LXXX

Notices
Road Cycling ďIt is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.Ē -- Ernest Hemingway

Sad.
Non-surgical providers are getting screwed, there is no doubt about that. Itís unfortunate that all of the risk based models donít really work for family medicine or primary care, especially since this is the site of service most capable of stopping over utilization of services.

I've heard that from my PCP as well.

If there was ever someone you want to make a sheet-ton of money, it's your doctor. I want mine well motivated to take care of me.

Oh, and by the way, your lawyer also.

I feel your pain on the salary reduction. Nothing fun about that, phrantic.

At the beginning of 1994, I became a partner in a law firm and borrowed money to pay for my buy-in. Under the partner pay structure, my base salary went down, but I would be sharing in the profits so that was good, right? We had our first child in June, and my wife quite her job as a social worker because her pay would not cover child care and the other costs of going back to work. Well, the profit sharing thing did not work as I anticipated or was told it was (another long story), and at the end of the year I found my earnings down 20% and with my wife leaving her job we were down 40% for the year and had a new baby. I still had to make the note payment for the buy-in. That was before I ever saw a 6-figure income, so needless to say it put the hurt on us. It sucked.

But, having often looked back, it showed me what I needed to do to advance my career, and really got me going on a different and better path. Hopefully you will look back and say the same.

So, hang in there. It's a long game.
