Addiction LXXX

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Someone needs the come up with a calendar with a daily quote from The Thick of It.

From the episode on our TV this evening:

"Time is a leash on the dog of our ideas."

That's a cell phone picture through the eyepiece of my 1000mm newtonian. Doesn't help that I was trying to look through a whole lot of atmosphere.

On a clear night I've managed to resolve Saturn pretty well. Not enough to pick out cloud colors but the gap between the planet and its rings was clear. Pretty surreal to see, even after the first time.

I wish I was better at using it, but in the future if I want something more serious I'll probably just get something motorized with a database.

Didn't match the hype, but there are lots of nearby lights in unincorporated Knox County.
That was it. Though the naked eye it's neat to see them so close - the real hype was being able to see both of them within the same field of view of a telescope.

That thing looks sweet! I've overall had good experiences with Chinese guitars and basses.

I've never owned a hollow body, but I have wanted a semi-hollow Telecaster Deluxe for a really long time.

A while back I watched some vids comparing Chinese Les Paul copies to the real deal. Some of the Chibson guitars were reported to actually be pretty good.

I don't know. I worked on some med mal defense in the late 80s, but it's not really my interest. I do have some doctor friends who have told me that they thought the reform went to far in favor of the medical community, but they were not saying that publicly.

I didn't think I would be able to see much detail through the camera, but it is all I have for magnification.

Years ago I was camping with the kids and some other friends, and there was an astronomy club getting together in the park one night. They had a bunch of really nice telescopes set up pointing at different things, including Saturn. It was pretty cool seeing it through a really high powered scope, and we could see the rings very clearly. It was really neat how all the guys let our kids look through the scopes and talked to them about what they were seeing.

I underestimated the Jeep build. Took 3 hours start to finish. Power wheels kind of let me down. Majority of the drill holes didn’t line up. I would have expected that from one of the walmart brand Jeeps but not power wheels.

29 degrees when I went out this morning. Felt good until I didn’t.

There is someone in my parents' neighborhood who has an observatory in his backyard with a pretty big telescope.

He regularly hosts parties in the summer where he opens things up for everyone to come look. I agree, Saturn through a big scope is spectacular.

Astronomers seem to be pretty nice people. I'd like to think they've got a bit better perspective on what really matters.
