Upgrade fever even before buying the bike

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Upgrade fever even before buying the bike

I'm spec-ing out parts for my new bike and I've caught upgrade fever even before I've bought anything. I keep justifying buying better (and consequently more expensive) parts because they would last longer, and I'd end up getting those anyway sometime down the line. Better to save money and not buy the intermediate part.

This happened the last time I built something. My computer started with a $500 budget and ballooned to $1000.

I've got to balance out my wants/needs/utility/value.

This happen to you guys?

For many bicycle parts, "more expensive" does not mean "lasts longer". More expensive may mean "weighs less", but lower weight often means poorer reliability.

As I've mentioned in several other threads, I purchased my first road bike today. The guy at my LBS mentioned several upgrades I could make up the road and my reply was "It'll be a long time before I do that"... My wife just turned around and laughed straight to my face in front of everyone... so yeah, I have a tendancy to upgrade and spend way to much money on whatever my latest passion seems to be

Guilty as charged. I upgraded to Ultegra and Dura-ace before the second week was out. A few folks on these forums thought it would end up costing more than simply purchasin the next model up (it didn't).

Maybe it's simply a guy thing. Or an American consumer thing. Either way, performance with the Ultegra brakes and DA derailleurs is in an entirely different class than when I first bought the bike.

I think it might be a guy thing, in general. My wife says the reason God put her on Earth is to constantly be my voice of reason... It's amazing how often she's correct when she pulls me aside and whispers something along the lines of "Honey, maybe we should wait a few days and think about this". If there's one thing I love more than cool gadgets it's COOLER gadgets

Generic Track hubs Vs. Dura-Ace Track or Phil Wood track hubs?

Thats whats killing me. My wheel set is going to cost a bunch.

I'd suggest you put the shipping address on your other bike as mine, and get a better bike than the one that comes to my address....

You show good potential for a prospective OCP ... Dont worry you get over it eventually... by buying more expensive stuff.. I did that for a few parts the 1st month I had my roadie...

Well, I'm building a different purpose bike. A fixie. I already have a nice Roadie. I decided building a fixie over getting Zipps to build up my motor. I know thats not OCP-ish thing to say or admit.
