Turns out it was the headset all along. It was strange in that if your headset is loose enough to rattle, you usually just need to barely rock the bike back and forth with the front brake applied to see the headset parts move, but it didn't move unless I really rocked it good. The cup was really resistant to adjustment also, like gunked up threads (or just 35-year-old parts that haven't moved since initial assembly), but once I got it moving I tightened it a little over a turn 'til it was adjusted properly.

I also repacked the front hub while I was at it, and got rid of 22.8 grams of dead weight; drastic average speed improvement is expected:

The last car I bought that DIDN'T have power windows and locks was in 1991. The FIRST car I bought with power windows was in 2001. I remember when Dad bought a '68 Oldsmobile 98, we thought it was SO LUXURIOUS!!! because it had power windows!

It was also an enormous boat poorly sized for the narrow roads of rural PA. And with the black vinyl roof and black vinyl interior, it was sheer hell to get into on a hot, sunny summer day.

I hope removing those retaining clips doesn't cause the front to fall off. Be careful!

The white Jeep had manual windows and locks. We rarely locked it unless we had something of value in it or where in a sketchy place. I did keep the gate locked so people couldn't take the recovery stuff out of the storage compartment.

I had a very similar issue with my SLT last year. I was sure it wasn't the headset but the stupid thing kept loosening ever so slightly.

I also repacked the front hub while I was at it, and got rid of 22.8 grams of dead weight; drastic average speed improvement is expected:
I'd sure rather have those than lawyer lips!

I had a '75 Toyota with manual windows, locks and a stick. Traded it in '84 when I finished school. Everything after, with the exception of the white Jeep, had power windows and locks. My last stick was a '91 Mazda RX7.

The Dodge is the first car I ever bought for me with an automatic. I sometimes wish I'd gotten the stick, but after listening to me complain about creeping in traffic with a manual, Mrs. GeneJockey threatened me with grievous bodily harm if I bought another car with a stick.

And the month after I bought it, I was hit with sciatica in my left leg which would have made working the clutch painful, so I guess it's just as well.

I miss my 95 integra for it’s simplicity, and the manual transmission. I never thought “my” car would be an automatic, especially if I were to buy a new one. Now I just don’t care, plus having a car the wife can’t drive just seems silly, and cause for bigger problems later on down the road.

I'm currently fighting crazy urges on the vintage bike front. I haven't even built the C'dale back up and I'm already looking at other Ebay listings. I really, REALLY don't need, want, or have room or money for another bike!!!

The transmission man where I worked was good with that thing. He was good with everything he tried, actually. Only about 35 now, he gives me hope for the future of our business. A few years ago he quit because of the manager and we figured it cost the dealer at least $200k because he was gone for a year and came back when the manager was replaced.

I wonder if they could develop a noise analyzer for bikes. Yesterday my friend's BMC was creaking something awful. Sounded like the BB to me.

The fact that you can get a pretty good one for not a whole lot of money is what sucked me in. Steel frames being so easily modified can lead you down a weird path if you let it, too.

I'm itching for something different really bad.
