One of the best rides I've done was with the Wounded Warriors. The pace was agonizingly slow, there was ice cream stops and other food stops every 5-10 miles, and the big ride was 30-ish miles. It was really good.

Oh yeah ice cream rides are the best. Especially ones after dark during the summer. Even extra especially if you're lucky enough to be with someone you're sweet on and they're sweet on you back

I snuck out of work and did a club ride this evening. There were 10 riders and the pace was pretty quick for this early in the season. It was a beautiful sunny evening. We only dropped one rider and she told us not to wait. All good.

I had 2 Volkswagen beetles. A 64 which started knocking when a friend was driving it. I took it apart and whoever last had the engine apart had installed part of a beer can as a shim under a rod bearing. Needless to say I had to put a crank kit in it.
I also had a 56, the one with the small rear window, a wheel for the gas pedal, no gas gauge with a giant gas cap, a 36 horsepower engine, and a non-synchro transaxle. My friend wrecked it when he was drunk.

Nice 55 mile ride today including a slice of pepperoni. The roads on the route are mostly quiet and 2 of us were cruising along, my friend was on the left line of the bike lane, and a guy rolls down his window and started screaming at us to "get in the bike lane" then he went ahead to another rider 100 yards up the road and started honking and screaming at him. Then he pulled over at a bank and we were right there when he opened his door. My friend told him "get your door out of the bike lane" which really set him off.
He got out of his car and started screaming obscenities at us, just then a cop came the other way and my friend told her the guy was harassing us. At the same time I stopped and asked the guy what was wrong with him, we weren't in his way or some kind of threat. He shut up when the officer got near him so we just went on to get our pizza.
People be crazy.

I went on a 8 mile ride even though I'm still no better. It will flare up the nerve pain for a couple of days and then I'll try again. At this point if I can ride 3 days a week for 45 minutes/ride I can gain a little fitness for when I'm can ride pain free.

I didn't yell at anyone nor did anyone yell at me.

The Beetle was my first car purchase. Got it from Mrs. rjones28 before she was Mrs. rjones28.

The Mk I was a 4 door diesel. The Jetta was kind of boring, but it got me to work. The SportWagen is my favorite.

They are/were all manuals. Well, the Beetle was an Autostick.

Took the Battaglin down off the hook for today's ride, which was, IIRC, the first 'short sleeve jersey' ride of the year. Did the same ride I did Friday on the Circuit, just 0.2 mph slower, but to be fair, I wasn't really pushing today.

That's why they had the huge gas cap, you could see how much was in the tank. They also had a reserve tap under the dash. I think 1964 was the first gas gauge.

What fork is that? Seems like the blades are too flat and wide to be steel. What year is the frame?

That fork is steel, with teardrop cross section 'aero' blades.


This frame is all steel, built out of Columbus MAX tubing, oversized, ovalized, and triple butted, and shaped to hell and gone. The top tube and down tube are ovalized vertically at the head tube, and laterally at the seat lug and BB, respectively.


The seat tube is round at the top and ovalized laterally at the BB. The chainstays are bladed, too, and the seatstays are ovalized. It was designed rigidity for big, strong sprinter types.

I don't know exactly how old the frame is, but I'd estimate 1990 +/- 3 years. Any earlier, and it wouldn't be MAX, because that was introduced in 1987. Any later, and they'd have routed the cables differently for less friction under the BB so it would work with Ergopower levers. I bought it on Ebay in 2007 as a naked frame, had it blasted and repainted as you see it, built it up with 2006 Chorus (2007 was black finished), except the HS and BB which are Chris King and Phil Wood, respectively, and added a custom wheelset with White Industries hubs. Up until 2020, it was my go-to bike, the one I knew could handle my 'winter weight' with no complaints. Late Summer of 2020, I replaced the old short cage Centaur RD with a medium cage Veloce, so I could run a 12-30 cassette, and also replaced the Cinelli 'Nerve' bar with a Soma Highway One.
