I had 2 Volkswagen beetles. A 64 which started knocking when a friend was driving it. I took it apart and whoever last had the engine apart had installed part of a beer can as a shim under a rod bearing. Needless to say I had to put a crank kit in it.
I also had a 56, the one with the small rear window, a wheel for the gas pedal, no gas gauge with a giant gas cap, a 36 horsepower engine, and a non-synchro transaxle. My friend wrecked it when he was drunk.

I had a 68 Karmann Ghia for a while when I was 18 - loved that thing. I wrecked it in the rain on Chantry Flats Rd., totally sober...and a total loss.

Oh, yeah - and it is very rigid. Fantastic for out-of-saddle efforts, because there's absolutely no flex in the BB. Rides a little hard, for that reason, but now that I'm not running 125# in the 25s I have on it, it's a lot easier on the bum. Actually more cushy than the Cannondale with 25s inflated the same (90F/95R).

That cost me all the money I could come up with plus I was assigned risk for a year. Never again.

I still didn't learn about letting friends drive my cars. I had a 65 Cadillac convertible. Got it cheap and did mechanical work and it ran great. Let my room mate use it when his car was down and he crashed into someone at a stop. It was still driveable and he told me he would take care of everything. Months later I got a letter from DMV saying my driver license was suspended until I resolved the issue with the driver he hit. WTF? His wife told me he had intercepted mail from the other driver and their attorney. I need my license for my job, let alone for driving to work, etc.

Must have been something in the air. I never have problems with drivers but someone tried to coal roll me yesterday.
They really need to work on their technique and be mindful of relative wind though. They started when they were probably 10 yards in front of me but there was a pretty stiff L->R crosswind so I didn't even get a whiff of it!

Agreed. Why push it?
My symptoms didn't arrive until the next day. Promptly. I would just rest up the shot-day and the following day. Most people are good to go by the second day.

I had a 63. I don't remember if it had a gas gauge. It did run the windshield wipers off the spare tire.

btw, you're not missing anything good by not whiffing it.

I had cars that had the vacuum wipers, run off engine manifold vacuum. When driving up a hill the wipers would slow way down and even stop.

I offered to sell it to him cheap, I would have taken $200, but he wouldn't buy it. We weren't close friends and after that we weren't friends.

A friend broke his frame and it took a long time to sort out if they were going to warranty it, or he would have to buy a new bike so I offered to let him use my CAAD5 on the condition that he NOT race it and just use it to keep in shape. Montrose ride was approved. He had it for 5 months, raced it and crashed in a race, scratching it up and putting a deep gouge in the fork. He also swapped parts around and when I got it back it wasn't rideable because the drivetrain was mis-matched.
I offered to sell it to him cheap, I would have taken $200, but he wouldn't buy it. We weren't close friends and after that we weren't friends.
