Chick Needing Advice Buys New Bike

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chick Needing Advice Buys New Bike

Dudes and Dudettes,

Many thanks for all your suggestion about a new bike as well as good wishes. I looked at all the possibilities and ended up with exactly none of them. The bike I bought actually came looking for me, and it seems to have all the things I wanted minus the price tag (ok, so I'll have to give up that next pair of Manolos ). It's light, carbon, has a shorter top tube so I'm not over-reaching for the handlebars. It's an amazing ride after the mastodon I've been used to. Want to know what it is? (Here's where you go, give it up, b*t*h, we're tired of waiting.) It's a 2005 Kestrel Talon - Ultegra 10 STI Triple, and I think it was made just for me. I pick it up on Sunday, psyched to have a great ride. Plus, the guys riding in Central Park might just look twice at me... er, my bike.

I spent more than the 2K I intended so I'm looking for deals on Ultegra pedals (for the time being I'll use my old 105s (please, no grimacing), a good computer (I'm hoping I don't have to spend $150 for a decent one as I don't need TOTL), and some carbon water bottles (again, could not justify spending the dough for these flimsy things). I can always add these things later (though I placed a bid on ebay for the Ultegra pedals, fingers crossed).

If there are any Manhattanites reading this: if you pass me in the park, honk.

Kim

I like the midnight blue color they have.

Computer? I am partial to the Cateye CD300DW wireless with cadence. No wires, easy setup, more than enough info, and can be had off Ebay for about $100.

Do I need the 14.99 remote button kit that's extra? (My bike is that midnight blue color, I like it too.)

Manolo shoes are an expensive type of shoe. I mean some people's bikes cost less then the shoes do.

congrats michelan on ur new ride. i love the kestrel, they are indeed very sweet ride.. even to just look at. as for carbon cages... check out performance forte carbon cages.. it's light and cheap with the 20% off code. i got my pair when it was $19.99 each (thanks to blandin )

as for computer.. u can get the wired one, if you don't mind, the cateye astrale 8, for around $30 with the 20% off code from performance as well.

post up a pic of ur ride if you get the chance... it's always nice to get more eye candy

If you don't need a cadence function, check out the Giant wireless computer. $40.

wow.. i would never buy my gf a $400 + shoes.. i just can't justify that. hell, my gf became my wife, and i still won't buy that for her, no matter how much of a cary bradshaw fan she is. my cycle shoes only cost $80 and to me it's a grip already.. lol. i rather save that $400 for our water softener..

lucky u on dodging that one! now u have additional $400 to spend on ur bike

Nice choice. My ridding buddy from work rides a Kestrel Carbon, I don't remember the model, but it's got beautiful craftsmanship.
