Road bars - 26.0 or 31.8?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road bars - 26.0 or 31.8?

Just wondering what are the differences (if any) between standard 26.0 mm and "oversize" 31.8 mm road bars? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type?

Presumably a 31.8 mm bar will be stiffer, but I'm sure there must be more to it than that...

The disadvantage of the 31.8 bars is that they suck. If you want to put accessories on it (i.e. computer) then you have to be careful to find something that's compatible, and not everything is. Everything will fit on a 26.0 bar.

The 31.8 bar *can* be stiffer, but only if designed properly.

Yes... a 25% markup in price. And you need a different stem... with a 25% markup in price. Honestly, unless you can really feel yourself deflecting a 26.0mm bar considerably then a 31.8mm bar just gets you big bulge in the middle (of your bars... or maybe somewhere else - you decide), makes it a little more difficult to mount stuff like lights and computers and causes all the retrogrouches to shake their heads at you while the technoweenies will tell you that you should have gone with an integrated carbon fibre bar/stem combo.
