PLEASE... Get her of my back!!!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

PLEASE... Get her of my back!!!

I went to a garage sale this morning and bought a Takara Olympian bike for $30 but can find nothing about it (even used the search feature). It appears by the componentry to be a very nice bike but I'm catrching hell for spending the $30. She says theres nothing like it on eBay so therefore it must not be much. I say "Bull". This bike is in near new pristine condition. Was I right on this one. Heck I would think minimum I'd at least get my $$ back on eBay. I doubt you could by the rims for $30. It has Shimano Light Action Deralleurs, stem reads Custom, the crank is Sakae SX and the frame is Tange 900 dbl bttd cro-mo.

She's giving you hell over $30? ooookay....

That's a nice looking bike, by the way. Looks like a real bargain.

Something tells me the problem has nothing at all to do with this bike. It looks like a great deal to me.

PS- Do you give her hell for $30 purchases? Do you ever bring things home for her? Does she feel neglected? There is a much bigger problem than this bike.

as i understand it takara bikes are just your run of the mill japanese bike boom bikes.
so i wouldn't expect that much.. but you could probably make your money back..
you could post it over at classic and vintage forums they might have more to say

I don't think the problem lies within the $30 bike as well....

Shoot I wanted this to be her bike but she just won't bend over to shift a gear. Says it scares her. I'm trying like heck to get her a road bike but she just wants to ride a fat tired mtb. Ok with me but ..all the time??? I usually end up pushing her up the hills... I can't leave her behind because I get quite a bit more than just $30 worth of hell

Would she be willing to try bar-end shifters?

If so you could get some of those, and maybe some aero levers with brown hoodds while you are at it, so she has not "cable loops" in front of her....I know some people freak out and worry about getting tangled in those things.

Looks like it would make a great commuter bike or rain bike at least. Put some clipless pedals on and you can even use it for training.

That bike looks pristine! Great find for $30. I agree with others that the problem is not about the bike. At anyrate, if you want to convince her to try using it, you might as others have mentioned, consider switching the shifters over to bar-cons. Another option would be to find some old SRAM GripShifts and mount them to the end of the drops. I did this back when I had my 1993 Specialized Allez Sport equipped with RX100 because I couldn't afford STI which was only offered on Ultegra and Dura-Ace back then. How many speeds is the setup?

The early GripShifts were quite small and fit perfectly at the end of the drops. They made everything look so much cleaner. All the cables were routed under the bartape even. Of course downtube mount cablestops were required. Besides, looks mean squat if the bike isn't ridden and if making the bike a little ugly so that it's more comfortable for his bike to ride it then I'd be cheering him on.

Dude, grand slam for $30. If it were me getting grief I would be starting the tet offensive on how my wife can justify $60 haircuts, $100 colorings, and all the other bull$hit they bring home in hair care every 6 weeks. Trust me they spend more than we think it's just not a bright red road bike that isn't concealable. Ride it / enjoy it.

Speaking of hair cut costs... I'm pissed if I have to spend over $15! Gentlemen -- ask your wives what they spend on a cut and colar... I'l give you a hint, it ain't $7 for the bottle of haircolor and $15 for the cut. I was floored. The english have a great expression, gobsmacked!

$30 for a bike, any bike? Would have been a crime NOT to purchase it! Look at how clean that baby is!

This old Trek sold for more than $430 on Ebay today. Just take off the Takara decals and put on some Trek decals and voila, you've made a cool $400.
