For the OP, whatever floats yer boat dude. I prefer to get my tan at the pool and wear a jersey when I ride, but who am I to judge?

My riding buddy has a strict 'sun's out, guns out' policy - if the temp is above ~18 deg c and the sun is out, his shirt or jersey comes off. I've tried it but prefer to stay covered. Also, getting a burn can be very very quick if the sun is directly on my shoulders and back... in South-Central Canada, anyways... Scotland is further North than us, so I would bet the sun is not as intense.

Thank you for reminding to wear sunscreen when I go for a ride this afternoon... first 55+ day in NYC this year.
Last thing I want is a sick tan, because I prefer not to be sick from tanning in a few years. Also, leather skin and liver spots. ugh.

My father was an avid gardener and spent hours in the evenings and weekends bent over exposing his shirtless back to the sun. In his mid 30s, An enormous amount of cancerous skin and muscle just above the waistline was removed. It scared the crap out of me. The depth of the tissue removal was incredible. Convinced me.

I've ridden my beater MTB around the neighbourhood on a really hot summer evening with the kids to the park and whatnot, but on a three-hour road ride? Nah. I normally cover up my arms, even in the heat of summer, when I ride during the day. Easier than putting on sunblock.
I have, however, run many a times in the summer heat shirtless, which feels great. But usually not during the midday sun.

required: lambchop sideburns, high rise rainbow socks with toes, cheap-ass aviator glasses, 2nd vote for the jorts, and hopefully you have a really hairy back. In that construct, shirt off is mandatory, regardless of season.

As I understand it, a tan somewhat protects you from UV? If so, it'd make sense to build it up slowly at first.
