aside from carbon fiber wheel failure and feeling sorry for the 2 riders who went down and probably got injured, I've never seen this type of bicycle. I've seen a "double" bicycle or whatever you call it, where husband and wife ride it on the street, or parent and child, at some distance from each other. where two guys in spandex sit so close to each other that the guy behind is breathing into his behind...i've never seen a sport like this. i would never be interested in this type of cycling, unless the cyclist upfront was Pamela Anderson in her prime

Wow, videos of pros on cutting edge equipment experiencing failures. That should never happen. But it does - race cars and boats experience mechanical and electronic failures, sailboats have masts that fall and keels that come off, skiers have poles that break, surfers get hit in the head with their boards, bats break in baseball, and on and on.
Anything can fail when pushed to the limit. But, the odds of that happening are pretty remote. More people crash because they don't unclip their pedals than from carbon frames assploading.

Question for anyone other than the OP:
When was the last time you heard of a rider in the pro peloton experiencing anything even approaching what the OP is talking about? I definitely can't come up with anything. Only CF wheel failure that immediately comes to mind in the last decade is when Cav's front wheel (was it Cav's?) got turned, causing it to buckle and basically highside him. But at the speed they were going, I don't think any wheel was going to withstand that change in lateral load.
