Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for thick cycling socks

Can anyone point me to some nice thick cycling socks? I've got feet and toes that are sensitive to pressure points therefore I usually end up riding with a slightly big shoe (i.e., 44 instead of 43.5) and thick socks.

Sometimes I just wear a normal tube sock with the top folded down but I've mostly been wearing I've been wearing some older Specialized socks that are made of CoolMax and are actually double layer (like two socks [one over the other] but joined at the top).

I suppose I could just wear two pairs of cycling socks but that just seems silly...

Sounds like you might be better off getting a custom or semi-custom insert, like https://yoursole.com/

regardless if you get that or not, I've tried many different pairs and my absolute favorite is https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=1320

I'd recommend them for everyone. The biggest thing I dislike about other socks is the stitching around the toes. These are great in all aspects. Some might think they're too thick for hot weather, but I think they do a good job of wicking away moisture and keeping my feet comfortable.

I wear WrightSock Running socks, which are dual layer and somewhat thick. Sorry I don't know how they compare to the Specialized. I also wear WrightSock "Cool-Mesh" ankle socks which are also dual layer but are quite a bit thinner than the Running. They have quite a few socks to choose from, check 'em out: https://wrightsock.com/

Trek makes a nice heavy wool blend cycling sock. I have a couple pairs for cooler weather riding.

I agree with Telenick. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, Smartwool does it all. They're great.

I agree, Smartwool are the best. A company called Icebreaker also make wool cycling socks too, but I'm not sure of their availablity in the US.

I hear all the time of people having 'pressure points' or 'hot spots' when they ride, and all I can say is is that quite simply your shoes don't fit.

I had some Look road shoes for years, and would always get some discomfort - whether it was numbness or sore arches. Then about 4-5 years ago I bought some Sidis, put some slightly thicker inserts in them and *viola* - pain free cycling.

Inserts are always worth playing around with, but if that doesn't work, try a different brand of shoes.

I also use the Wrightsock because I have a narrow foot but not narrow enough for a narrow shoe.

I've been using UnderArmor socks and they are reasonably thick without being to warm. I'll wear them most days unless it will be really hot in which case I'll switch to a thinner sock (Smartwool or Specialized) to give my feet room in my shoes. I got them at Dick's Sporting Goods for $8 for 3 pair I believe. I own around 12 pairs now.

My Smartwool hiking boot socks are too thick for my bike shoes, so I use mid-weight Thorlos that I already owned, and they fit just right. But if you've deliberately bought large shoes, you can't go wrong with Smarwool.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. My LBSs only have the thin socks so I'll be doing some online shopping tomorrow.

WRT insoles... I already have Superfeet insoles but my pressure issues are mainly in the toe area. For those who are interested when I was a kid I dropped a can of cat food on my big toe. That toe nail points slightly upward now, just enough to rub the top of the toe box.

I second the running socks. There are cushioned models that give you the thickness you're looking for as well as breathability (which you wouldnt get from just thick cotton socks). Nike has some nice stuff. I've seen shox no show cushioned and it might be what you're seeking. Try Sports Authority, Finishline, or running specific stores to see their selection.

Also as others mentioned, smartwool has some thicker socks to try. Their rbx ultra cushioned comes to mind. I know REI carries em.

Also look into Thor-los ...They make nice lo-cut running socks, and in different weights. The heels and toes are built up with extra cushion. Make sure you check them all out, the light weight ones may not have have enough padding for your needs.

I actually buy them to run in and just use them on the bike as well. I too, wear bigger shoes due to a weird foot shape.

They are the same price no matter where you shop. I pay the same at Macys or Sports Authority. I will say for the price I wish they lasted longer but they feel very good for a decent time.
