Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can I do it???

I am a relative newby to road biking but have mountain biked for several years. I ride about 3 times a week between 25 and 40 miles each ride. While scouring the internet I came across a web site for the One day ride across Michigan (my home state!) The ride isn't for another couple months and I was wondering if any of the more expeienced riders could give me some advice. What kind of mileage should I be doing for training, what type of fitness level is necessary to accomplish this kind of ride (150 miles) and should I even plan to do it this year or wait until next?

Any help is appreciated.

you should be able to do it just fine. Get in a couple century's before then, maybe do a 60 mile group ride on the weekends and ride another 40 afterwards. Try and find a group of riders your ability that are doing it.
You want to make sure that after riding a century, you are not in agony. Another 50 miles is a long way but if you feel comfortable with 100 then 150 should be attainable.
Its West to East right?

Yeah, it's west to east. Thanks for the encouragement. I have talked to a bunch of more experienced riders at the lbs and they all seem to give about that same kind of advice. If you'll excuse me now, I have to go ride...
