Your Ride Reports - June 2021
If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, we welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, we welcome you, too.
This thread is for anyone who rides a bicycle ... or unicycle, tricycle, tandem, etc.
Are you an experienced road cyclist? Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? Do you ride weekends? Do you spin at home or in the gym? Is Zwift your thing? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Touring? Audax/Randonneuring?
Or are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid?
There are no set challenges - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group.
Just pick the target that you would like to achieve this month and post updates throughout the month as you work toward your target. We love seeing photos of your rides and hearing all about them.
Given the current situation many of us will be cycling solo or indoors. Don't feel alone! Share your accomplishments with us.

I was in the Ocala Nat Forest for the Memorial Day weekend. Saturday I went for 42 miles on a hilly ride. Sunday did some more off pavement riding and found some shortcuts from the pavement to the trail areas. Total was 40 miles. Monday I rode around a wildlife preserve that also is a working ranch. I had to dodge cows walking across the roadways. 42 miles as well on a mix of pave and non paved sections.

Past Thursday did the evening 27 mile Davis Is. ride. Saturday I was back in the Ocala Nat. Forest. I was on a quest to find a Zillow house I was stalking. Got thwarted by a loose sand road. On the way, in a deserted part of the forest, I heard some thumping noise beside me. I looked over to see a fairly large bear running away. 44 miles total. Sunday also another ride around the forest for 42 miles.

Did my birthday ride this past weekend. Did a 59 mile group ride on the tandem with my wife, put the tandem on the car, had a beer with the group, then got on my single and did the 17 miles home from the ride start to get my total. I designed the course and start point with that goal in mind.

Back in Tampa this week. Saturday I went on the Picnic to Davis Is. ride for 42 miles. Sunday I rode to Phillippe park and came back via Courtney Campbell trail for another 42 miles. It was hot and muggy. Sunday temps were 84 degrees at sunrise. It was overcast so at least I didn't have the sun beating down on me.

My typical Tuesday night ride (my "fast" ride for the week) was rained out this week, so I found something fast to replace it last night.
Note to self: When the ride has multiple state champion riders, riders who have USAC Crit Nationals (Masters) podium finishes, etc., it's going to hurt.
Ouch.

My wife and I had one of those "perfect" rides last week after work on our tandem. It was only an hour, but traffic was very light, the weather was warm but not hot, sunny but late afternoon so the wooded areas we rode through looked dark and mysterious, we did a climb that I'd previously been afraid to try on the tandem and it wasn't bad at all, we worked hard-ish but not really hard, etc. It was one of those rides where, when we swung off the bike, we looked at each other and said "That was REALLY nice".

I'm 76, rode Tour de Prairie event out of Cheyenne Wyoming on Saturday, 6/26. About 60 riders, aid stations at 12.5, 25, and 50. Last four miles to the 25 was uphill and into a significant headwind. I did the 50 mile out and back, my longest ride to date which put me over 1000 miles for the year. Average speed was 10.6, 1900 feet of elevation gain.

I finished June with approximately equal cycling and jogging time, about 3.5 hours each per week. My mileage is about half of this time last year but total activity hours are about the same, just more jogging than cycling. Only seven rides in June but more distance per ride than May, in which I did more but shorter rides. Still struggling with neck pain but doing more physical therapy at home, same stuff the PT clinic showed me a couple of years ago.
And I'm a bit slower. While my aerobic fitness is still very good due to running, it doesn't really translate to cycling. My average time is about 2 mph slower than last year.
But it's good to be riding again and seeing my cycling friends again for casual rides. I missed most of them in 2020. Not sure I'm ready yet for the weekend 50 milers with the faster group, but I might give it a try this month.
Cycling: 7 rides of 20-32 miles each
Running: 11 runs of 4-8 miles each
Walks: 17 walks of 1-5 miles each

Last Saturday went to Weedon Is. for a 42 mile trip. Then Sunday I went on a new ride south of where I live through rural/industrial area. Basically it sucked. It was hot. I was tired. I passed several port areas with large truck traffic. The environment was nasty. The road was full of debris. I counted myself lucky when I got home without a puncture. Spoke too soon, when I went out the next morning the back tire was flat. 32 miles of blah.
